help: replaced water pump, and now I here a banging

Ok here goes. I replaced water pump, all hoses, t-stat and flushed coolant. I now get a banging clanging noise seems to be coming from inside engine. I get poor response during the banging and clanging up to about 2500 rpm's then all is well. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong here. Car is a 88 gxl stock form, no mods

Maybe a stupid question but did you buy the right waterpump? does it not touch the inside of the waterpumphousing?

water pump matched up fine. could it maybe be another problem unrelated to the pump, like say maybe e shaft or stationaary gears. I need to go to philly for a few days, should I drive her or take a differant car. Runs fine at higher rpms just bad up to 2500. Also today I took her to the store and noticed a slight howling sound, sounds like a fan howl, not the usuall bad water pump howl. I nned this car to run right, its my only chance to make it to rotorfest, and enjoy the ride of no pistons, my other 7's arent even close to being done

to add to this, the engine had good compression before the pump change, and still does now, just a lack of power due to the clicking sound up to about 2500 rpms

Stock viscous fan isn't bolted on correctly?
Not seated right?

Fan shroud not adjust correctly allowing the viscous fan to hit it?

Did you use a gasket or silicon to mate the two surfaces? I have seen the waterpump impeller rub inside the waterpump housing without the use of the gasket. Belt tension is correct? Could be slipping after your 2.5k mark and just stop clanging.

Make sure the fan is straight. Those things go on weird sometimes.

i am using both gasket and silicone, belt tension and fan are all fine, checked many times checked everything over and over, and my head still spinning over and over, maybr it is a new problem that just popped up like these cars tend to do?

10 weeks of work on the car = 1 hour of drive time
then back to work to fix another problem
all started 13 years ago with my first rotary, and i still love them

Okay, stupid question, but have you tried removing the belt and turning the water pump by hand?
