I am doing some detailing under the hood. I have removed the P/S and idler pulley (for paint) I want to do the same for the alternator. How do I remove this. to disassemble it there are 3 screws under the pulley. thanks

the pulley in a vice then break loose with big socket. might need to do a bit ofr prying to get it off. dont take the nut completely off till you take it outta the vice. dont want the alt to fall onto your feet.

no, those screws hold the front bearing in place and don't need to be removed to disassemble the alternator, if that is what you are asking. to disassemble the alternator first pull the pulley nut off then pulley then the 3 outside screws on the case(not the ones under the pulley) then tap the back half of the case with a mallet to seperate the halves. it takes a little bit of work to get the stator out of the brushes, it will come out with some pulling, just be careful not to damage your brushes or the stator assembly.

Add suggestion #1 and #2 and you've got yourself a free pulley to paint... I was actually looking at my spare alternator, lastnight, thinking the same thing.

Nice. That's the great thing about his forum... We share bran-cells.

your impact must suck then. just use the same socket in a 1/2 inch drive with a piece of pipe. i remember it being kinda a bitch to get loose. also just an fyi its a two piece pulley.

Not for the waterpump pulley, but the best practice for pulling the main pulley is to hand-turn the engine so the little pin above it lines up with the RED mark on the pulley.

Remove the four bolts and scrape a gash in the back of the pulley, so it aligns with the red mark.

Do your thing and after you paint it, the gash you carved will still be noticeable. Reinstall so that the gash is lined up with the pin, again.

You may want to carve two separate lines in it. One aligning with the RED mark and one aligning with the YELLOW. These are timing marks that may come in handy, later.

You COULD carve said line into the front of the pulley, near the center, that way you can reference them, after it's mounted without having to look like Houdini, trying to see them (on the BACK of the pulley.

While everyone ELSE will find this thoroughly amusing, you probably will not.

TrboSpdAnt bet me to it.

Before removing the main pulley (you called it there crank pulley) make sure to put some alignment marks on the pulley and the engine. Its easy to get the timing mark aligned wrong. On the pulley, I take a file and make a very small groove where the timing marks are before removing the old paint.

Not likely they're worn off... Probably covered with various stages of slime, **** and ****.

Clean it up, then look again.

Don't remove it, but see if you can clean it up, while it's still on the car.

Straighten out that AFM at the Filter.
It should be level.(think of a swinging door on an angle. It doesn't open and close properly).
