maybe the coldstart was removed an not compensated for? it holds the throttle open up to 1200 rpm's for a little to warm up the engine first....

When you start the car cold, it should fly to 3K RPM for about 10 (or is it 14?) seconds. Then it will settle down to 1500 RPM or so which will gradually decrease as the car warms up. Does yours do this?

My GXL won't fly to 3k like it used to for as long when cold, since I made some better grounds (Weird?) but anyway. The cold start thing could be possible...there's always...you know...the possibility you should actually look to see if it's still there.

Good chance though, that you have low compression. My friend's does, and it won't idle at all, but after a few minutes (like 5 to 10) of keeping it revved, it'll idle just fine because the seals expand.

with my foot on the pedal or my hand on the throttle body i can maintain the rpms at about 500rpms, so i doubt that its the compression.

no my car does not fly to 3k rpms, rather it just dies right down.

what amI checking for and where is it located

Car won't idle when cold

Check the water temperature sensor (on the back of the thermostat housing). I had the same sort of problem because the wires were broken.

Check your emissions and AWS components... Specifically the thermowax on the throttle body and the BAC valve... If your BAC is removed, your car won't want to hold idle when its cold, especially if you have any belt driven accessories... Likewise the AWS, or "accelerated warmup system" which Aaron referred to, is there to help the car stay running until it's warmed up... If either of those are removed (common practice), then you're basically stuck having to play with it until it's warm...

so i just warmed up the car to operating temperature, and then I checked the TPS with my reliable OHM meter... it read zero (open circuit).. WOT, zero.
so i removed it and bench tested it, only when its full pressed in does it give me a reading.. its at about 550ohms, then when i let it slide out about a millimeter it drops to half that, then back to 0ohms.
sound like the problem?
can i drive withut a tps?

You can drive without a TPS but you can't stop without one...
