Don't assume the coils are bad if you aren't getting spark.

First, check all the fuses, especially the EGI fuse.

Second, verify that you have 12V at the black/yellow wire at each coil plug when the key is on IGN. If not, then you have a problem with the main relay.

Third, check the CAS. Proceedures in factory service (see FAQ) and Haynes manual.

If all those check out, then you can scope the outputs of the ECU to see if the coils are getting signal. If they are, then your coil packs are bad. VERY, VERY, EXCEEDINGLY RARE to have both coil packs (and 3 ignitors) fail at the same time.

Are you sure you are testing for spark right? My father in law assured me that I didn't have spark and sent me on a wild goose chase for over a week (it was actually just flooded).
Also, how is 5.50 super expensive? Sure it might not be as cheap as some cars, buts its still less than 25 bucks for all 4 of them. You could even splurge a little and get plats for 7 a piece. Thats still less than 30 bucks total. Iridiums are only 8 bucks a pop, but you have to get a 60 dollar spark plug socket to put them in.
Also, under no circumstances put anything other than NGK's in.

you could try some working used ones just to see if thats the problem, but they could be not working without you knowing it and just cause more of a headache. Have you read about unflooding procedures? ir could be something simple like that.

Have you followed the steps I have outlined? Coils in these cars rarely fail, and it would be HIGHLY UNLIKELY that both the trailing and leading coils would fail at the same time.

I would take stab in the dark and say the car is flooded, do a search in the forums for how to unflood, and i think they tell you how in the faqs how to unfloood its not that hard to do.
if the car has been sitting awile i can just about say its flooded.

Make sure the ENGINE fuse is good. Inside the car fuse box. You'll have neither spark nor fuel pump action unless it, the ENGINE fuse is good. It pulls in the Main Relay to provide pwr for the coils etc.

If you can hear the fuel pump pumping, with the fuel pump check connector jumpered, then it isn't the ENGINE fuse.

I've never seen a bad coil. Lucky? No.

Read the free online factory service manual and look at the wiring schematics and you'll see what I write about.

No spark? And your real sure? Then you won't mind grabbing a sparkplug wire and having someone spin the engine over while your other hand is touching the engine or negative ground, whichever is easier to touch. I'm serious. How sure are you? Come on. Give it a go.
