Help Me identify a noise

Ok guys, I need your help in identifing a noise. The car is an S5 if that helps.

Driving, under acceleration, NO noise.
Take my foot off the gas, stay in gear, loud squeaking noise, loudest in 1, 2, 3, barely audible in 4 and 5. Extremely loud in reverse.

I have some idea's what it could be, but I still would like some opinions from you experts about this.

Let's discuss.
and of course,
Thanks in advance.

Does it only make the sound when the clutch pedal is pushed in and the tranny is in gear during decel? or does it happen with the clutch both in and out?

It's only while in gear during decelleration and only decal. Nice and quiet during accel.

One of my idea's was that the tranny mounts need to be replaced. My thinking is that the transmission is moving around so much that it's causing the drive shaft to hit/rub.

My other thought is that the U joint is worn out complety. That would require me to buy a new driveshaft since the factory ones from Mazda are 1 piece everything attached. I was thinking of getting the Mazdatrix aluminum driveshaft. And since I'm be under there anyways, might as well get the tranny mounts replaced too, sort of 2 birds one stone...

Ideas?

jack the rear end up (or even the whole car), put it on stands, then see if you can duplicate the noise with the wheels spinning in the air. if you can then try and search underneath the car for the noise source, that may help at least narrow down the culprits.

Sounds like a transmission issue to me... The driveshaft, axles and diff should all operate about the same wether the transimission is in gear or not. think of the transmission as two halves, when you move the shifter into gear, you connect the two halves. So, if the noise is only present in gear, with and without the clutch engaged... it (in theory) has to be the part of the tranny that you are connecting by puting the car in gear.

let me clarify one thing. The noise goes away when I push in the clutch... It only happens when I take my foot off the gas pedal and decel while in gear. No other time.

in that case, I'm leaning toward a clutch related problem.

I am experiencing the same problem. It almost sounds like a brake squeak and has a cyclical pattern (as if I can hear the tires rotating). It also seems to be coming from the right side of the car more than the left. (Louder when a wall is on right than when wall is on the left; I checked).

Im at a loss and thanks for the ideas about what to look for.

So I looked at another thread related to this problem, and there was a suggestion it might involve the free play in my clutch lever. I checked and found a little too much play. I excitedly tightened it up and took it out for a spin. A little less noise, but still quite evident. I also notice it was loudest in reverse, loud in first, slightly noticeable in second and non-existent in 3-5. Sounds like a bird chirping under the car. (Yes, I checked and couldn't find a nest anywhere).

So, after 3 people with much more experience than I suggest its the pilot or throw out bearing, I will attack that. Can anyone tell me if these things are fixable on their own, or do I need to replace the entire clutch?
---

Nevermind, I talked to room mate who had pilot go out on his Integra GSR. I have to replace clutch. He suggested upgrading to a better one and putting in a lighter flywheel. I'm going to drive this clutch into the ground while I save up and buy the new parts. When it goes, I'll do the swap. I'll update this post with pics when I do in case anyone who is experiencing this problem needs a hand.

The clutch is slipping. My friends clutch is going in his rx7 and it squeeks every time he downshifts. It is definitaly not your pilot bearing because the bearing only works when the clutch is in. Under normal crusing the e shaft and the trans input shaft are moving the same speed and the bearing is stationary, so - 5 on that.

Is it a SQUEAK, or is it that, weird, like, wooooooooo noise.

both of my FCs have made the woooooooo noise when deccelerating.

Either way its the input shaft on the trans, worn bearings or something of the like.

this noise is commonly found when the roller bearing that supports the 4th gear inside the tranny goes bad. the bearing is pressed on the input shaft. Not the throw out bearing, but the roller bearing.

Just to clarify, the noise is a squeak, similar to a songbird chirping. Only in reverse, first and second. Only on deceleration. And only with clutch out.

So whats the fix? Can I replace the bearing? New shaft? New tranny?

The noise is a bit annoying, but everything feels and drives fine. How much damage will I do if I keep driving it the way it is?
