Help...Loud Bang When Shifting
So when i was putting on my new exhaust a bolt fell off my car on the right (passenger) side, right in front of the rear wheel. Now when i shift the there is a loud bang from that part of the car and the car shakes. I cant find where this bolt would go though. I looked at the Diff mounts and tranny mounts but i still cant find it Someone please help me. thanks
Info on the bolt:
14 mm head
35 mm in length with the head
It has a lock tight washer on it...didnt seem to do its job though

There's also a lot of exhaust hangers, suspension parts and the sway bar in that area. Check everything. Maybe something is near something else, your rear end dips down when you shift (as always), then the two things hit. I dunno. Just saying there's more to check, assuming that bolt is even related.

An exhaust hanger would never cause a loud bang hen shifting. I say it's on the front-most diff mount. After putting load on it and then pushing the clutch, it stops flexing and slams against the bottom of the car.

strut bolts, brake caliper bolts, sway bars, axle to rear diff bolt, some of these are bigger, just throwing ideas out, if you check those areas you might find it
even if the diff mount looks good, stick a pipe or long tool under the diff and try prying it away from the subframe, I've had diff mounts completely seperated that looked intact until you put some force on them.
Edit: or what chaosseven said.. check the cups that that subframe bolts go through, they also have smaller bolts off the end of them if I recall correctly

I got under the car again and checked the shock mounts, sway bar, subframe tabs. It sounds like something is being pushed into the floor of the trunk

Looks to me like the bolts that holds the Diiferential Collar onto the side of the car.Check the Side of the Differential,I call them EARS.the Diff is held up on the subframe by a Stud that you put the Ear onto(through the bushing of the Differential. Then you put a 'collar onto the Bottom of that Bushing and then the 19? or21mm nut that goes on the Bottom,But the bottom collar is also held in place by a Bolt, about the size of what you speak of,It may be Flexing there and giving you the Noise...Oh another Idea, could be a brake caliper Bolt, check the back of your caliper to see of the bracket is firmly in place. They use 14mm bolts to hold the bracket on.also 14mm bolts hold the ebrake bracket on.

hey mate
maybe jsut go around and try and tighten all the bolts.
my car does that wen im changing gears but at high revs and wen im hammering it, my diff mounts arnt broken from what i can recall, but i havnt looked at all, so i mite need to do that.
does it do it wen u bak off or when you clutch?
when i broke my pinion bearing in my diff, when i baked off even at normal driving it used to go 'bang' tooo...
jack the rear of the car off the ground grab the tail shaft and spin it left to right. if it has play in it before it actually spins the rear wheels then its your pinion bearing broken.
try that, my car was doin that thout it was a diff mount, or something like that...
cheers
