HELP! I can't keep push starting!

OK I CAN but I don't want to.

I am at work right now, and to make a long story short my car will not start without me push-starting it.
my car is stock with the exception of the mods listed in my sig.
I also have a new interstate battery, that is less that 6 months old

The Symptoms:
-I turn the key and I get nothing, not even an attempt to crank, I just hear the solenoid click. (not the repeating click of a broken one though)

-Everything else (headlights, fan, et cetera) all work at full capacity still.

-It was doing this the other day, but then stopped and returned to working normally.

-my horn decided it wanted to start honking when I turned the wheel. Once before I got it started, and once while I was driving.

with the car off my voltage reads at 12.

I am kind of confused, I don't see how it could be the battery as everything else is working. I know cars sometimes get squirrely when the batteries are dead, but my battery is pretty much new.

Any Ideas?

I'd grab a battery (from a known running car), and jumper the starter. If it works you can work your way up the electrical totem pole. If not replace the starter.

I don't see how it could be the starter, because when it is not acting funky the starter cranks hard and fast just like it is supposed to.

The starter can have a "dead" spot, which I've seen before on other cars - it stops in a certain position and won't work until it gets bumped/turned past it.
I'm thinking starter, but you really need to post more on the problem - when it fails to start, does it click or make other noises? Have you checked all your grounds?

I would start with checking all your grounds, and check the starter as well. Take some wood and put it on the starter and hit it with a hammer a few times next time this happens. Sometimes a starter can get 'stuck' at that dead spot and this can free it up. If your feeling motivated take the starter out and check the teeth on it and your flywheel/flex plate. While its out jumper the starter and make sure the armature is coming out all the way and spinning.

Where is the ground for the starter? I should probably check that

Runs from the starter right to the battery. Its the bolt on the driver side if I remember right. Check all ground while your at it. The cars 20 years old and has a history of having bad electrical issues.

next time it does it bang the starter with a hammer a few times, if that fixed it it's the starter.

if it doesn't, clean up the battery/starter ground. it's the wire that goes from the - on the battery to the frame rail (there is a bolt holding it on there, this is one of the places to clean) and then to one of the bolts in your starter (this is the other place to clean).
