Help with fixing stock premium stereo and speakers on 1991 convertible

I have the CD/Tape combo with the Headrest speakers. Only the right front speaker plays at a normal level. The headrest speakers make a pop noise when you turn them on but don't play anything. I found the rear amp in the passenger foot well. The headrest amp by the spare tire. I will assume it is the front speaker amp right below the stereo. The speakers seem to have 4 or 5 ohm impedance.

Has anyone had a similar problem with their speakers and resolved it?

The tape deck does not work because the rubber band drive belt melted. Where can I get a new one from?

The CD player takes a CD in, spins it about a half turn then ejects it. Why and how do I fix this?

Thanks

I have the same car and I work at a car audio shop and I asked about the headrest speakers before. What I was advised to do was just take out the headrest speakers and pretend like they never existed becuase they are most likely to be the first speakers blown. To resolve your cd problem I would just buy a new CD player along with a mounting kit and wiring harness and just bypass the amplifiers once you put the new CD player in. If the speakers are poppin then they are most likely blown and you can't find the head rest speakers anywhere anymore.

If you do go and get a new CD player and you are goin to do it yourself the power attenna on the rx7 are negative and positive voltage like every other car lol so you'll need a relay so the attenna will go up and down.

I hope this helps

Are you sure about that? It was my understanding that the headrest speakers are simply standard 3.5" speaker (and a quick search here confirmed that), which can be very easily found on eBay if nothing else. Though it wouldn't surprise me if they're a bit of a PITA to replace.

If you're absolutely set on keeping the stock head unit & amps, look around the For Sale sections of the forums or ask for them- very often the stock amps are things many people rip out and toss. The head unit will be a bit more expensive- and I've heard that the stock CD player skips like a schoolgirl when you so much a look at it funny.

Personally, I'm going with a hybrid approach- I'm keeping the stock speaker locations (including the headrest speakers) with a new head unit and a sub. Dash speakers will be 'Front', doors will be 'Rear', and the sub and headrests will be run off the pre-amp outs.

Also, I expect this thread will shortly be moved to the Interior/Exterior/Audio section.

Yea I'm sure they are harder to replace. People have asked about replacing them and you can't because no name brand company (ex Alpine etc...) don't make 3.5" anymore, just 4". So I wouldn't recommend using ebay stuff because it is most likely that is some piece of junk speakers. BTW if it says 300watt it will never ever reach 300watt because the speakers will blow and I don't think that info is right because I don't know of any good 4" speaker that has a total peak power of 300watt. I wouldn't trust it but up to you . I'm sorry I wouldn't recommend getting those speakers because the Alpine S-type 4" speakers have a peak power of 150watt (75 watt RMS). So there is some bad info there. Like i said just take the headrest speakers out and pretend that they were never there, but it really is up to you about what you wanna do .

If they are 3.5" speakers go with these

I really don't think that having them will really make a difference but they are better quality than ebay crap by far . You will probably have to order them because not many car audio shops carry them (I know my shop doesn't) and please god don't get your stuff installed by circuit shi*ty or best buy...they won't do a good job on the install. Also if you decide to get an aftermarket cd player you just use the stock mounting brackets, no need for a mounting kit

I wasn't recommending getting the eBay speakers, just pointing out that they did exist. Though honestly, if he's planning on doing what I am (keeping the stock headrest amplifier so the center console controls can still be used) that amp doesn't put out nearly enough power to endanger the speakers. I haven't worried that much about it myself since I know the speakers in the headrests of both my seats work just fine.

I am not actually sure it is the speakers are even bad. I know I am having multiple problems but I am trying to fix whatever I can. Whether I just need a used head unit or amplifier. I may need to change the entire system but I really did not want to do that if I could get around it.

Does anyone have used equipment for sale?

Do the rear speakers play treble? I could only hear a small amount of bass from the one I had hooked up.

At least one of the headrest speakers make the turn on pop noise, similar other amplified speakers, but there is no sound. I thought it would be nice if these worked.

Can i get a mounting frame for a new headunit or do I need to go Double DIN?

I have an 88 vert. I changed out my stereo, and it's a big improvement. It cost me about $350.00. Pioneer MP3 CD from E-tronics.com around $150, Sony x-plod 6" round 3 way speakers (Walmart) in door (requires a little metal cutting, used same grill), Pioneer 4 1/2" 2 ways in dash (Walmart). 8 inch sub woofer (e-tronics) with 100 watt mosfet amp (circuit city, 50 bucks) in spare tire area. I added a cup holder in the extra space below the head unit. I think it's for a ford taurus. You can get them on ebay.

The rears play both treble and bass but tipically the rears have more bass.

For the after market head unit you can use the stock mounting frame but you need to get a pocket to fill in the extra space. Once you get a new head unit and bypass the stock amplifiers you should be ready to roll . If the speakers i have were the right size for the car I would send them to ya. I have 4 6.5" Pioneer 3-ways from an older, but from what the programs at work say the 91 verts have 5 1/4" speakers all the way around. If ya want the 6.5" I'll be more than happy to send them to ya cause I certantly don't need them.
