Neither the inside or outside handles work?

The complete description of the door is in the on-line manual, body section.
You can download it at the link in my sig.

Once had the same problem -> the door mechanism uses also a spring, which was broken in my case...

Need to provide more details of the problem. Is it happening from both the inside latch and the outside door handle? You have a 15+ year old car, things do break. The typical problem is a broken part on the latch that doesn't work or something has become disconnected as a result of you, or someone, working in the door or it could be a broken connector.

You should take the inside door panel off and check the latch connections to the door handle and to the locking mechanism. If these are sound and not disconnected or broken, then check the latches themselves for broken springs or mechanical parts. Check inside the door at the bottom to see if there are any broken bits or screws rolling around down there. If you find anything then that may be an indication of where the problem is and what broke or came loose.

The repair is as simple as replacing the broken part or reconnecting the loose rod or connection. Junk yards, Auto retirement centers, auto recycling operations usually have the cheapest parts but these are also 15+ year old parts and subject to wear and breakage.

New door

Just open up the door and find the spring and replace it. FSM = your friend.

I took out the broken one and went down the local home improvement store (i.e. Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) and found a spring about the same size.
I couldn't find one that was exactly the same length, but I did find one with the same diameter.
I just cut it in half and saved the other half for another broken spring.

This is going to be the fun part...I was able to use a long flat head and managed to hook the other end onto the proper hole.
It takes me like an hour to do this job. :P
