Question Help: Custom or Stock Gearbox Crossmember?? (S4 RX7) (Pics)

Hi Guys,

OK, here is the story. From what I understand my 1988 S4 RX7 was originally an auto and was converted to manual.

I have been under the car today and just can't seem to work out how the gearbox has been mounted, as in whether the cross member is a stock S4 item or if it is a custom fabricated item.

Do you think the cross member is stock or custom?
What is the small cross member behind the main one?
What is the metal rod bolted between the main cross member and the little cross member?
Is this metal rod standard?

Etc etc

Please have a look at these photos and give me your thoughts.

Custom. The auto vs. manual mounts are in different locations. The proper way is to just modify the body to move the mounts and use the stock Mazda manual pieces. The wrong way is what you have now. That is frightening.

Thanks guys,

After talking to a few people locally I have found out that the front larger cross member is the factory S4 MANUAL one and the smaller rear cross member is the factory S4 AUTO one.

You can see the larger manual cross member has been attached to chassis via some custom steel mounts/plates.

Apparently the smaller rear auto cross member would have been left in place just as an addition point of strength (hence the square tube bolted to them both).
