Help - Compression Test

Hey guys,
I have been looking at an '86 Turbo II and my mechanic had a look today, he said it looks really good for a 21 year old car, went through what he checked etc. with me and then gave me the compression reading

60-65PSI per rotor

As soon as I heard this I naturally asked why this thing is still running? :S there is no smoke while running, the idle is funny but it's been diagnosed as bad TPS adjustment, the engine is only 25,000 k's old, what gives?

He did the compression test on the leading plugs, not the trailing plugs, not sure if this makes a difference or not, and he said he doesn't really know much about rotaries so it's best to ask someone who does, way I see it, there's lotsa people on here who know a lot more than me :P

Anyway, do you think the mechanic has just done it wrong? Because I would've thought if a rotary is running 60-65PSI, it wouldn't be running at all :S I just said to him, AFAIK that reading is just, well, poo.

Anyway, not sure if he's done it wrong or not, but yeah. No smoke while running or when revved up and comes down, it is turbo but I thought the rotary didn't have lower compression to compensate for turbo, and even so, it's still really low.

Let me know, I really like the car but if the engine is gonna need a rebuild pretty much straight away he can forget it.

it should be above 90psi per rotor. with a difference no greater than 10. he might have done it wrong. you cant use a piston comp tester without holding the valve open in order to get accurate readings.
