HELP! car idles bad, almost dies at lights-automatic!

I had to drive to Georgia and trade my S4 vert for a S5 GLX because I could not get the car titled(Long story).

So because I had a 10hr drive back home I took off after checking out the car. has 90,000 on it.

car runs great, even for an auto!

Only problem when coming to a stop or rolling at less than 10mph the idle hunts pretty bad. at lights it almost dies but doesnt-i dont see how cause it bounces off the first hash mark.

doesnt matter if hot or cold.

I dont know what to check for since the is my first S5 and I was still learning my S4.

I will check for a vac leak but what else?

any help appreciated.

Mike

I have a S5 GXL auto and it does the same thing. Except for its pretty random. I think there is a screw somewhere that you can adjust and it will fix it. At least thats what my mechanic says and we'll see when I take my car in to be worked on.

You either have a vac leak or possibly a bad BAC valve IMHO.

That's what I was going to suggest.... It seems like Everyone agrees it's vaccum somehow, I'd start there..

One other suggestion...the variable resistor has quite an effect on the idle. My TII will actually die with it set wrong. Its the little black piece with the screw in it near the air box. It should have markings for R and L (rich and lean). Try tweaking that at idle to see if it helps.

NO DONT MESS WITH MIXTURE, Just idle it up a tad, normal idle in drive with the brakes on should be 700, and in park should be 1100, if it goes lower then that idle it up some. thats what it sounds like to me, i have mine at 500 idle in drive with the brakes on and i dont have any problems, so i dont know, but you might just check that.

yeah, my uncle raised the idle a bit for me today. still seems to idle a little off. not as smooth as i want but I havent begun to tune up the car yet.

just got it last night after driving 22 hours round trip by myself. I am too tired to play with car right now.

You need plugs, plug wires, and an oil change, that should help alot if its idling bad.

Why should he not mess with the mixture? That control only affects the mixture at idle. For me, I had to do 3 things to smooth my idle...

1) remove and clean BAC
2) adjust variable resistor
3) set TPS back to spec
