If it's the same series and type (turbo or NA) it'd be super easy...a day maybe, if all went well, an easy weekend if not.

IMHO find the best 7 you can get for the $ you can spend... keep in mind the rotary engine is a whole breed on its own, I have known very compitent and certified mechanics as personal friends and they have seen my 7s and said WTF... whether you buy a beater or a road ready ride, these forums will help you get stuff done.. after you go thru you first few rx7s you will have a better idea of what to look for when trying to score a good deal.. good luck on your purchase... shane

I've seen two of my mechanic buddies pull a FC engine and trans in 45 minutes.
That was in a shop with air tools and stuff, so your results may vary.
It also helps if you've done it before and have a grip on everything that must be disconnected and in what sequence.

You can leave almost the entire engine intact, no need to remove the manifolds...in fact it's probably easier to do it that way, saves your back from all the hunching over.

So last night I found this in my area.
1986 Mazda RX-7

I contacted the owner and he really knows alot about rx7's. I think maintenance wise it has been very well taken car of. I'm going to go look at it next thursday. I'm going to do a compression test while I am there. What would be a good reading? NOTE: I will be using a normal piston compression tester.

I'd get him down to $500 on that car. It looks sickly.

Remember, you're going to have to spend some good money to get that car road ready and un-fugly'd.

I agree with the 500 range probably no more than 650..
Although i may be a little concerned about why the rear brakes are missing.

Yeah I am going to make sure to ask him about that today when I go to go see it as it is a little odd.

I'd also ask about the fuel tank.
If the original is all gunked up because it sat or something, you'd also have to be concerned with the fuel pump and lines.

A tii would be a great start if you can find a good deal, i just picked one up running, but had some electrical issues for 1000.. if you buy that one test the fuel pump, blow out the lines and change the filter once you put the new tank in before you try running it.

Don't buy a historic car. You can get a used car in decent shape from the year 20XX. A rusted out rx-7 is going to be a big money pit/waste of time. Focus on your grades and college applications.

I'm not looking for a car just to drive. I have a car for that. I want a project car that I can drift and race with.

Okay so here are the pictures I have received from him. Now notice in the hatch the two plates that are drilled in there. Are they supposed to be there? And okay back at the Craigslist post do you guys think that the rear wheels look like they're not centered? Also I'm curious as the why the rear brakes are missing and how they got the lines from stopping going to the rear.
