Help buying a FC..former FB Owner
Hi guys,
First time on this part of the forum. My Series 3 rx7 got stolen a few weeks ago. You can read all about it here:
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ght=rx7+stolen
Anyways, I'm now in the market to buy a series 5, and before I go off to start test driving and looking around, was just seeing if you guys can give me any advice for what to look for in an FC.
Firstly, I'm after a 1990 preferably. Def Turbo. And a 5spd. Apart from the usual rotary/piston stuff to look for, what should I be looking for that is a weakness of the FC?
With the FC itself, how many different models are there? I mean, like GT, GTX, stuff like that.....
Any help would be appreciated, because as you can appreciate, most of my knowledge is of the 12a and my series 3 which I've had since I was 18 (now almost 23).
Thanks.

well im assuming that you know enough about the FB you dont need to look for too much other stuff then the PD which the FC has, and leaks. so if you smell a strong gas smell either walk away or low ball the guy.
and a S5 turbo will be a hard one to come buy, at least in my area. but im sure you'll be impressed by the handling; it wont be the go-kart ride of an FB but it will still be fun. thats pretty much all the advice i can give at the moment, but happy hunting !

mostly just look for minor problems n stuff because thats the downfall all the time like vacuum leakage will cost a bundle to repair.. also you should already know sense you are a former rx7 member that mileage is a big deal in the rx7 especially if you want a turbo but if your plannin on rebuilding the thing go on ahead. there so many model fcs but i think i would take GXL for the ones you can actually get...but if i were to take any fc it would be a infiini but youll never see those. and if you dont plan on rebuilding the engine then try looking for one that has the origanal wanko engine in there

Yup, I'm def after a FC1032.
As for the actual model... like the GTX, GXL.... what are the exact differences? here in Aus there doesn't seem to be too much...apart from the factory rims and probably some trim difference.
I'll check for the vacum leaks, but I didn't think the 13B's were as bad as the 12a's for that. And first thing I'll be doing is swapping that awful top mount intercooler to a front mount. Mileage, I'm looking for anything under 150k miles I think.
Also, how much boost is the standard turbo running? 8psi? 10psi? I guess checking the compression is vital as well. I just read the stock is 6.2psi... that right?

hey i just wanna give you props on moving up. i've owned 2 first gens and even turbo charged one of them. the FC is an amazing car and definately a step up. i'm glad i switched now honestly it wont make THAT big a difference between s4 and s5 turbo... once you start modding they are both just as fast. all my friends here have s4's and they're all rediculous... i personally have an s5 tii block in an s4 but it's getting a haltech and **** anyways so it really doesnt matter. anywho, good luck!

LMAO...
I got that, but it's ok.
That has always made me wonder, why is it so many FB owners are so against the FC, and vice versa.... I mean, it's the same car, so lets support em!
I've loved every RX model out there, from R100 to Rx8, and the only reason I wont go back to a FB is because I wanted to drop in a s5 turbo into my s3, and now it's gone, I just don't see the point of owning another old car, I thought I might as well update to a FC s5 and save myself some hassles.
That doesnt mean I'm turning my back on the fbs!
I just had a special attachment to my FB because I knew its history and previous owner. I'm scared of buying a lemon of a s5 due to it's unknown history.
Oh and I've read the faqs....helped alot with regards to the FC.

good luck finding an S5 TII...im not sure about australia, but i know they are rare around here. the FAQ should help out alot. id go with s5 over s4 if you get the chance, if for no other reason than the dreaded pulsation damper fires.
btw...really nice fb man

I don't think you need to worry about "GXL" models or so. I think only North America got NA FC's. Don't you Aussie guys also import cars from Japan? Then the FC's on the market there should all be turbo. I'm not sure what the trim levels are over there but its mainly luxury packages/wheels or so.
As for FB owners against FC's, its because they have totally different characteristics. FC feels more comfortable and heavy, but has lots more grip. FB feels lighter and more nimble but noisier, slower, and rattles more.
