Help - Air Conditioner died

It an 88 Turbo. Last year, the air conditioning started to be "less cool" than usual. I figured since it had 160K on it and had never had a recharge, probably needed it. I had the system charged and everything was cool :-)

Today, no cool air - nothing. The compressor doesn't kick in when I press the button on the dash. (But it lights up.)

Where should I start? The belt is OK. Gotta believe the coolant is fine. (Besides, as I say, no "click" when I turn it on.) The outer pully on the compressor isn't spinning and it seems to me it did that when the air was on, right?

Any help is appreciated. Hate to let the dealer get at it.

Is there freon still in the system?
If there is no freon, this trips the pressure sensor to keep everything off, as running the AC with no freon will kill the compressor in a jiffy.  You can do a quick check to see if it's the pressure sensor, by locating the sensor in the front nose and jumping the two leads to see if the AC compressor will turn on - do NOT leave the AC running more than several seconds if you do this, or you'll risk damaging the compressor itself.

Meh, just take it out.

Back in 8th grade we watched some video on CFC's I think they were called, whatever it was that kills the ozone. Basically they were saying car air conditioning puts out CFC's, and to save the enviroment, you should go with the 4-40 system. They had these 4 ghetto guys doing a demonstration in some old beat up buick, and the 4-40 system was all 4 windows rolled down going 40mph to keep you cold, lol. To adapt to the 7, I guess you could go with the 2-90 system, lol.

Ted,

You are correct on your way to test the system, but the correct term is refrigerant, not FREON, this is a brand name. I cant believe it...... me: a noob that dosent know anything corrected ted. haha youre still the man its ok to be wrong once in a while.

In 1928, Thomas Midgley, Jr. aided by Charles Franklin Kettering invented a "miracle compound" called Freon. Freon represents several different chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, which are used in commerce and industry. The CFCs are a group of aliphatic organic compounds containing the elements carbon and fluorine, and, in many cases, other halogens (especially chlorine) and hydrogen. Freons are colorless, odorless, nonflammable, noncorrosive gases or liquids.

Although it's now a registered trademark of DuPont, it is a name of refrigerant.

hahah, this is something over my head, and I admit it.
I have a guy who takes care of ALL my HVAC needs, as he's basically certified for all that ****.
So bottom line is I don't have to worry about that stuff; if I don't need to worry about it, I don't bother to learn about it.

Dude. Check your cigerette lighter.

Sound strange? Not really, its on the same circut as the A/C compressor's clutch. You might just have a blown fuse.

Oh yes, and by the way, R12a is compatable with freon, dispite what anyone says. You can dump it right on into your system.

Dont let anyone sell you on a 'conversion' kit.
