heater core?

I've been searching but cant really find the answer i'm looking for....My question is this, what exactly is the function of the heater core and will a 87 GXL run fine w/o one or does it need it to be running good?

The heater core is an extra radiator with a fan that heats the interior. It can be bypassed... I crumpled one of the through the firewall fittings when swapping engines & used a 2 ft. piece of conduit & some clamps to bypass it. I get a low coolant alarm for about 2 minutes after cold start but then the alarm goes out & the engine is cooled normally. I will fix it when I swap motors again after rebuilding my original engine core. If you bypass the heater core your heat & warm defrost climate controls will not function at all.

Sure it would be ok if you can handle no heat.
