Question Heater and A/C

Well it finally got cold here in Florida, 65 degrees. I tried out the heater tonight for S&G's and it didn't work at all. I tried to switch the A/C to defrost and it just blew cold air out the face vent. Couldn't switch it to defrost or feet so does this mean the Digicon is gone or do I have a vent stuck?

If you have several functions that won't work, the Logicon (not Digicon) is the most likely cause. Search for the many threads on repairing it.

Put the car in the on position. Slide the temperature selctor from hot to cold or cold to hot. Do you hear a motor? If not, your logicon is most likely broken, they are over $400 new.

You don't need a new one, they're usually repairable.

Before you E-mail me, did you hear a motor when you did what I told you to do above? If you didnt hear a motor, thats why it's blwoing cold, the air mix motor isnt being activated to change the air temp to hot. I had the same problem. So I got a used logicon, you can take yours out to have it rebuilt(the forum moderator Icemark rebuilds them, www.mazdamark.com) or you can get a used one. New ones are $440 something at Mazdatrix.

I tried what you said and there is no change. My A/C works fine but there is no vent control except for outside air and recirculate. No defrost and no heat. That tells me the Logicon is not working. I have found rebuilt logicons at three differant places and some used ones at the local junk yards but I would prefer one either rebuilt or a known working one.
You have one for sale. Let me know your price, I understand the LED's come in differant colors, what color is the one you have?
NZ Convertible say's they are repairable, I guess I can send it to Ice Mark and have it rebuilt. I don't need it right away because I'm going to park the 7 in the garage for a few months and rebuild the drive train, new clutch, drive shaft and new dif mounts. I need the tranny rebuilt as well and found a Mazda mechanic locally that does it.

LED's are only different color if they are changed, Icemark does that when he rebuilds them. I'll have to check my extra logicon, as it is coming out of my parts car. Give me a day or two to plug it into the RX-7 that I drive and have a known good logicon in. If it doesnt work, its not being sold.

pretty common

The stock color is Orange on all 86-91 Logicons. Although I can change the colors when rebuilding them. My own model in my vert (for example) is Orange on all the mode lights except the A/C button light which I changed to blue and the sliders which I changed to blue. The blue works well with the display, but provides a nice upgrade over the stock orange.

Thats what I'm looking for Icemark. I'm going to rebuild the drive train first and then worry about the Logicon. I read on this site and some others that the Ujoints can't be replaced on a 87 FC, you have to buy a new drive shaft. Can a drive line shop replace them?

If you are looking for a really nasty way of adjusting your heater temporarily, then disconnecting the control rod from the air mix motor and the first plate it connects to allows you to move the air-mix doors by hand. Connecting something like a bicycle spoke to them too allows you some contol over the heat output, but does mean you have to fiddle with stuff in your footwell. Ideal method if you're waiting your paycheque...

Slightly tangential question: Icemark, have you ever posted an air motor and logicon to the UK?

No, but I send internationally to Auz/NZ and Canada occassionally, both by post and by UPS.

I usually send the items with the customs declaration as Automotive Samples, so that there should not be customs duties at your end.

Icemark, I pulled the drive shaft out of my 87 FC tonight. The front Ujoint is trash. The Mazdatricks web site says they can't be replaced but there is a drive shaft place here in Orlando that the Mazda dealership says that they can replace them.
Whats up with that! Can they be replaced or not?

People have found a way to replace them with special U-joints. The dealer will probably replace the driveshaft. Search for replaceable U-joints. There is a guy down in florida with a few parts cars. His forum name is Surfmon. You could probably pick up a good used driveshaft from him. I've dealt with him before, he's a good honest guy.

Good luck with your RX-7.

Thanks, if advanced driveline doesn't work out I will contact Surfmon.

Icemark, any comments?

There are aftermarket drive shafts that have replaceable U joints, and in theory (I have never done it, but others claim too have) you can bend the stock forks on the stock Mazda driveshaft to put new joints in.

i have a custom re-tubed drive-shaft for my turbo tranny<--->N/a rear end.
i do have a replacable U-joint at the pinion end of the shaft. But couldn't tell you the part# since i don't know. But i do know that the ears had to be honed out to fit the u-joint.

But ON Topic here.. my heater isn't working either.. I have a full S5 swap, body harness and all, even the S5 dash, S5 heater... but it does not want to work. It will click when i slide the Logicon control over to max blow... also, the trap door for Recirc/Fresh Air does work and move. But nothing else otherwise..
This is with the S4 Logicon.....

BC-X, Do you know if the relay for the blower motor has blown? (Excuse the pun) or if wiring from the fuse-box all the way to the blower motor is intact and correct? If you remove the heater fuse (in my FC at least) all the relays still opperate, and the mode and recirc doors move (the airmix ones don't, hence the question for Icemark, many thanks for the answer btw) but the blower motor does not spin up. Maybe worth a look?

little late to this. . but i'm still battling heat issues.

It turned out to be a fried Blower Amp box (little black box).. but i think my air-mix motor has bit the dust as well.. or something in there at least.
i have all functions but heat itself. ..the heater-exchange hoses are clear with no debris or kinks.. so the only thing i can come up with is that mix motor.

I called Radioshack here, and they apparent don't sell Thermal fuses.. ? so, i'm at a loss at the moment.
