Hey I was wondering if anyone has the pinout to the headrest amp.. If so if the could post it that would be swell. I'm tryig to look in he FSM but the one from rx7 city isn't downloading.. I'm only guessing its in there. Anyway thanks.

For those wondering I'm trying to get the amp to work with my aftermarket radio. and I'm going to either use the RCA connections or the other connections I'm not sure which is better.. but I'm guessing the RCAs had less going through them so it's less likely to blow anything. If anyone know how to do this that help on that would be just as fine.

Sorry I looked in the frequently asked questions.. becuase I try not to be annoying and my quick search for headrest amp didn't help much.. but your image was probably in a few of the threads but for some reason it only allows me to see the first page of search results going to the second page gives me an error.

Thanks a lot though. Maybe a FAQ section of all these diagrams and pinouts is in order.

Icemark, correct me if I'm wrong. But I believe that the S4 headrest amp is designed to recieve an amplified signal (signal sourced off the front speakers as I recall) while the S5 headrest amp (pictured diagram) is designed for a non-amplified signal. Aftermarket head unit RCA output is typically a non-amplified signal source.

I'm actually looking into wiring in the headrest speakers bypassing the factory headrest amp.

 

Hozzman you are correct.. and I was thinking about bypassing the headrest amp but if I can get it to work by giving it power and everything and so I have volume controls and al that then why not. NZConvertible.. Sorry I downloaded the Body electric section of the FSM and much have over looked that part..

I am planning to do the same thing on my 1991 convertible as soon as I find a pocket to fit below a DIN when I replace the double DIN.

I used an aftermarket amplifier on the stock stereo of my old Audi. I also wired up an aftermarket radio to the stock amplifier of my mother's Audi. You can buy solder or solder-less RCA plugs at radio shack for a couple dollars. Cut the wires off the harness and connect them to the male RCA plugs from radioshack and the amp should work as long as you also wire up the turn on lead and make sure the amp has power. The only thing that might affect the usefulness is the stock amp is designed to work with a certain amount of voltage and there probally isn't a gain to adjust for this. The speakers on my mother's Audi are rather quiet because the aftermarket radio is only 1 volt.

Does any one know the voltage of the stock premium stereo?

 

I had a quick question that I cant seem to find the answer to (after reading thru the FSM) This is on an S4 'vert, about the headrest amp. In the FSM there is a white wire going to the headunit from the headrest amp, connector I-17. What is it and what does it do? Im putting in an aftermarket headunit and want everything to work correctly. Thanks!

Edit: nevermind, i went out and experimented on my car, that wire is switched 12v when the radio is on. (nothing or ground when off, i didnt test any farther)

 

I called Pioneer to ask what the pre-amp voltage was for the headunit but they told me they only do aftermarket units. When I tried to call Mazda nobody answered so I guess they were shutdown for the week after Christmas. I decided to just hook up the radio to the 1991 RX-7 convertible and tried the headrest speakers. I used a Clarion headunit with a 4 volt pre-amp output and I got bad results. At full volume the speakers and the "subs" were still quiet. I decided to try the amplified wires (18 watt RMS) and the headrest speakers came in clear and the controls worked great. The "subs" did just what you could expect from 4 inches. I do not understand what the story is. Does the pioneer headunit have an 8 volt preamp or does it work off of an amplified signal? I think I am going to need to do some more research to figure the correct set-up or find someone at Mazda who will help.

 

I found the exact same thing when wiring my Clarion in my 91 vert. 4v preamp outputs are not enough for the headrest amp and the amplified signal output from the stereo unfaded is too much. I simply adjusted the fader so as to not over power the input section of the Headrest amp. I also wired in a set of capacitors to reduce the "attempted" bass output of the speakers.

It seems like the stereo wiring changed not only every year but between models in a year as well. People constantly spout advice not realizing this. I think the S5 airbag vert owners are especially screwed given the limited production of those years.

Figure If I get a deck that uses 8+ volt preouts then I probably won't want to hook it to the headrest speakers anyway.

 

I have seem an equalizer that boost the pream voltage to something like 8 to 13 volts. It was too long ago to remember. I still want to try to contact Mazda to find out what the specifications are but I am not sure how helpful they will be.

As for the S5 airbag verts I have noticed the lack of help and apparent differences when I try to resolve my steering system faults.

 

89 vert. I just ended up plugging up the headrest amp to the amplified signal too. I tried both, amp'd won. I don't have another problem and that is the volume control has to be held in the volume up position for a bit to get sound out of the speakers.

 

Did you guys change the speakers or are you using stock?
I wonder because the stock size is like 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 and I cant figure out anything to put in there.
