Headlight issue

I just bought a 1990 convertible and have discovered that the headlights do not work except when you pull on the flash to pass lever and hold it. When I cut the lights on, the headlights do not pop up but all the other lights work fine. I can get the headlights to pop up with the other button that does that function solely but the headlamp switch does not get them to light up.

I have experience with FB's but this is my first FC. I did a search and it would appear from what I read there I will have to replace the headlamp switch assembly.

I think the wiper switch has similar issues too as the wipers only work on one speed and the intermittent feature does not work either.

Gotta love the electrical gremlins that find their way into Mazdas!

Has anyone else had a similar experience and if so, what took care of your problem?

Thanks for your help. As I go through some of my projects on this baby I will post them up for review.

Sounds like a headlight switch issue or headlight relay. I would pull it out and make sure the harness that plugs into it isn't fried since they are known to take the harness out with the switch.

If you search threads by HAILERS in the second gen section there are recent ones on this with electrical diagrams to guide you.

Now, once you get that fixed, if the high beams don't work it will 99% of the time be the CPU board (only S5 Vert i believe) located in the drivers kick panel, but that is another story.

Here is one recent one with diagrams: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/high-beam-not-working-853735/

Thanks for the information and link. I'm hoping it is only the switch since I have absolutely no electrical knowledge or experience. May be my opportunity to try and learn something new!

I've really gotten out of the series five HEADLIGHT problems because there is no wiring diagram that is accurate for the convertible.

It SEEMS that the CPU is used on a series five convertible as part of the headlight system. Others have found replacing the board in the CPU that deals with the headlights fixes some of these convertible headlight problems. You might search around using the words CONVERTIBLE HEADLIGHTS or such words to try to find a few threads on convertible headlight problems.

That said, I have a question. There is an indicator on the instrument panel the is blue and lights up when the high beam is on. Does that blue light ever come on in any other positon other than when you HOLD the lever all the way aft?????? And when you hold the lever aft to make 'em come on, does the Blue indicator light up when you do that (hold the lever aft)?

The high beam circuit is the only one that runs through the CPU on the s5 vert I believe. So if the low beams are not working or if the motors are not raising at all it isn't CPU related, would be something mechanical like switch or relay or possibly wiring. I will try to find that s5 vert diagram for you hailers.....

Well, the USPS delivered a package this afternoon with a used replacement headlight switch assembly in it. After installing the replacement switch assembly, I now can raise and turn on the headlights but unfortunately, the high beam switch does nothing when the headlights are turned on. It does activate the flash to pass option when they are retracted. Based on your earlier comments, sounds like a CPU replacement is in the near future. At least I can drive it at night now though!

I forgot to mention that I have not seen the blue indicator light on the dash for the high beams either before putting the replacement switch in or after.

Yeah that is definitely the CPU circuit i was talking about. Flash to pass works, high beams don't..... Replacing the CPU will fix it, along with all the other stuff that might not be working such as alarm, ect...

http://mazdatrix.com/86-92Electrical-Chassis.htm (89-91 horn cpu W/ AIRBAG)

Glad to hear it worked out fine and it didn't burn out your harness that plugs into the switch. By the way, I wasn't able to find those s5 vert wiring diagrams, makes me want to go buy the actual FSM now......

Thanks for the advice. Now on to place an order with Mazdatrix for that CPU.

Lack of the blue indicator indicates power is not getting past the two headlight related relays. IF the blue indicator light DID come on, then it could not be a relay that failed and could not be a CPU problem, becasue the power for the BLUE indicator light is located after the CPU and the two relays.

That's why I asked about the blue indicator light......to figure out if the problem was a headlight filiment type problem. I was just curious. Look for a thread by JACKHILD 59 for the CPU part number (guessing at that).

Like this one: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...&highlight=CPU

Or an advanced search using JACKHILD59 and CPU and you'll come up with several threads similar to the above.
