Head light woes. :Time sensitive:

Hey I did a search on my prob (Yay 4 Me!) But the only threads I found are to replace pop-ups with flush mount... But there is the real question:

One of my head lamps wont come up, I expect the moter is frozen of has just gone bad. Both of em shine and all that grand stuff. One side moves the other dosent. Is there some way to open the other side untill I can pass inspection?? I would rather have it open than closed whil its broken. Mabey some magical relay i'm missing for that side?? If there is a quick-fix that I can apply within the next 12 hours

Please Advise,

did you check to see that the linkage from the motor to the headlight assembly is attached?

Yes, went thru and made sure there were no bad connections by checking to make sure they were all seated properly.

not the electrical connections... the mechanical ones.

There is a rod between the motor and headlight assembly. If it comes off the headlight will not raise.

Bad relay as I guessed. right side was corroded and nasty. Switched the lights on and moved the relay to the good side and pulled the fuse for the light moters to keep em open. YAY inspection time! Couldent see it yesterday in da dark :-)

There is also a little turn rod on the bottom of the motor to manually open them if the motor fails to open. There is usually a little rubber boot on it that you can just pull off.

Nevermind, you got them open.

i would like to resurrect this thread due the account of me having similar problems. (go search)! anyways, there is a relay for each motor?? here is my situation. s4 vert, owner crashed drivers side. i bought the car, motor doesnt work, tried to do it manual didnt move. replaced the solenoid black thingy. manualy moves freely, but is not getting juice becuase it's not "bumping" back like the passenger side. passenger side works and retracts fine.

driver side relay is the first place to look i guess???

thanks
steve

p.s. okay, i looked at the wiring diagram for the lights in the fsm, and i see that both retractor motors are connected to this relay. but more importantly, i see that there is some kind of "M" labeled in each of the retractor motors.

what does the M mean. master? i only replaced the solenoid, is there something else in the circuit that might be shorted out?

On 86 and most 87 there are two retract relays. Swap one for the other and see if your problem traveled to the other side of the car.

This thread just reminded me of a problem with my car. The passenger side headlight works opposite as it should. I.E. Lights off: pass. side is up Lights on: pass. side is down. The manual retract switch has the same effect as well.

funny you had the same issue I had a few days ago. One of mine would not come up either. I poped the hood to check the linkage and to see if there was ice anywhere or if something was jaming up the back side of the cover.

Nothing. I then was thinking of manually raising the headlight with the adjustment knobe under the car. A tiny turn of the **** engaged the motor and the headlight popped up on its own. I don't know if there was an alignment / position issue or something but it works fine now.

Ok, on the bottom of the motor is a ****. Its accessible, as its underneath the front bumper. Just turn it to the desired position. I would also suggest disconnecting the motor, just in case.
