Question Haynes Doesn't Say!!! What's That Fluid That Goes In The Shifter Hole

While in the process of changing the transmission fluid, I tilted it to the side in order to get more leverage. In doing so I spilled some of the fluid onto the floor. It was black and stunk of high hell! I looked in the haynes to see what to replace it with but all it said was, "fill it with the specified fluid.". WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN. I THOUGHT THE DAMN BOOK WAS TO TELL ME THAT KIND OF ****!.....WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING...HUH???

If you know what the mystery fluid is, your response would be more than appreciated.
Thanks!

We just used 80W-90 gear oil and it worked fine. Same thing that we used to refill the transmission with when we changed the clutch.

Hehe... a hair slow.

I would highly recomend flushing it. I have taken two or three cans of carb cleaner, sprayed one in and drained it. then repeat. Of course I did this with the tranny out of the car. but I don't see why it souldn't work in the car.
spray some in the shifter hole too. it will drain through to the drain pan.
Then you fill it with cheap the cheap stuff and drive it until it's hot. drain and fill with Mobil 1.
Sounds like a lot of work but Ilike to be thorogh.

You sure the Carb Cleaner won't have any adverse affects on the transmission, like the residual carb cleaner stopping the oil from coating the gears. I mean, I really dont want to go inside the tranny. It's just that i've never been in a tranny and dont want to mess something up.in the process of cleaning it.

After you've sprayed the carb cleaner, wait half an hour before putting the el cheapo fluid in. Carb Cleaner evaporates pretty quickly, but it might take a little longer than normal within your tranny...

Did you look in the haynes manual in the section for fluids? I bet it would have answered your question.

80w-90 is for all season where temps go below 0*C. use straight 90 if temps dont go below 0*C.

you only have to use a Few Oz, according to the short shifter install video on Mazdatrix.

id use brake cleaner. doesnt harm metals and leaves no residue like carb cleaner.

I second the brake cleaner notion.

The Mobil 1 stuff is 75W-90, but I doubt that matters.

When I drained my tranny, it was the same way, the stuff was BLACK, STANK, and was the consistancy of WATER.
