Hatch Light On While its closed ?!

hey guys,

i recently got my 89 fc and for some reason the hatch light stays on but the the hatch itself is closed.

and when i turn on the car i hear some motorized thing in the black trying to close or something.

i think it might be a sensor...? no ttoo sure an ideas what it might be ?

thanks

The only "motorized thing" in the rear is the antenna.

there are two switches, hard to see, built into the latches on both sides of the hatch. often my hatch seems closed but one of the latches is not locked and the light stays on. listen for a click on both sides as you close the hatch firmly. if its still on the latches can be adjusted, and the switches may need to be replaced. if all else fails you can keep the light off with the little switch next to the lense

do you mean the actual light on the strut that hold the hatch open? if so you know there is an on off switch on that. you can either turn the light on, or turn the light off. I know mine is not automatic you just turn it on if you need it back there. If you are talking about the dome light then it may be a sensor issue

i see where you going but i cant seem to locate where you are talking about.

is the latches more on by the taillights side where it closes?
how can it be adjusted if anything. if you had a trunk/hatch pic it will be greatly appreciated.

thanks

On the very back of the car there is an interior panel which should have a couple of twist tabs located at the top of the panel inches from the rear glass which need to be turned to open up the area to access the latches.

edit: actually the latches(2) will have a plastic cover over them and they should have two screws holding each of them on. Pulling down the carpet panel by opening the twist tabs may not be necessary but it won't hurt.

A thumb and index finger is all that is needed if the tab is not broken. On some cars the tab is broken and you'll have to figure a way of opening them using pliers or such. The plastic cover on the latch is surrounded by carpeting which adheres to the cover via velcro which easily pulls off and to refasten as well.
