Hard to start, and lots of wht smoke & then ez to start
I have a 87 Coupe 169,060+ miles. Got it as a "non runner", previous owner could not get it started. My friend has a 86 that is hard to start, he showed me this trick where you disconect the fuel pump relay? under the dash. Once it sounds like its about to start plug it back in and VROOM it started right up.
I Google'ed and checked out some sites, basicly seems like that the Injectors are leaking the excess fuel pump pressure in the chamber and flooding the engine. But I dont know for sure, but it sounds resonable enuff.
Anywho, after I got it running, the belts needed to be replaced cause they were screaming and moaning like Imps. I replaced the belts, checked coolent level, it was alil bit low. I filled the radiator, got in the car, did the Relay trick to get her started...this time it took alot longer than usual with this trick.
Once it started, it was running pretty ruff, blowing out quite abit of white smoke. The smoke did not smell like alot of excess fuel, but it did atiny bit, nor did it smell like Oil. After about 5-10 sec of high rev's getting it started, the smoke blowing etc, it was running smoother, but some white smoke was still coming out.
I then drove her around for a few mins, the white smoke went away. The next day, I started her with the Relay trick and it started fine, tiny bit of white smoke, smelled like gas, ran and idled fine. I drove her around on the Freeway and she was running great, except the 3800rpm dip/hesitation (i found out on a few web sites that I need to ground some brown wire to "fix" that)
Day after that I adjusted/tightened the belts, checked the coolent, filled'er up to the brim! Went to start it...just like before, very hard to start, ran ruff, blew white smoke, after some driving it cleared up.
Today when I started it didnt touch the gas petal, or the Relay, after afew turn-overs its started right up, idled about 1500-2000rpms, no smoke, no nothing. When I gave her a quick jab on the gas ot hesitated pretty bad, stomped the petal, hesitated and almost died. When I gently giver her gas its fine.
After min or so, I drove her on the Freeway, ran like a champ purring and zooming along, coolent temp gauge about 1/4 up, like normal. I was driving back home, theres a stop sign on a hill, and I not fully used to the clutch...stalled her.
This time it would not start, even with the Relay trick..it wanted to start, but didnt. I parked the car, walked home (about 200 ft) waited about an hour went back to the car. I did the normal routine with the Relay trick, after afew times I got her started, tiny bit of white smoke came out, smelled alot of Fuel.
I got her home now, and pondering whats going on.
1. Too much Coolent = very hard to start, lots of white smoke, clears up after afew mins.
2. After that, starts up fine with or w/o the Relay trick, once at normal running temp, hard to start.

Now what about the too much Coolent problem, are the seals leaking/failing?

1. I would say it dropped about 1 quart to maybe 2 (thats how much I put in to top it off) and it started that whole smoke thing.
2. The smoke didnt smell like Gas or Oil, so it must have been coolant.

Sounds like a coolant seal. The engine is flooding, not with fuel, but with water. This causes a hard start. When it finally does, it burns off the coolant, then it's okay. Sitting for just a minute, not much if any coolant can leak in, so it doesnt re-flood...but sitting for longer allows coolant to pool up and cause another flood.
Save for the eventual rebuild, or make plans for a used engine or whatever else you have in mind.

About how hard is it to rebuild the 13b engines, and about how long would it take?
I would like to fix it myself and learn alot about the engine. Sure it would be expensive and faster to get a rebuit and have someone install it...but I dont have that much money.

Do a coolant pressure check, that'll tell you if you have bad seals or not. My guess would be that the car hasn't seen a tune-up since you got it. I would suggest the following.
A) coolant pressure check
B) compression check (just to get some idea of it's condition)
C) full tune-up (all fluid changes, change every filter, plugs/wires, adjust TPS, look for vac leaks/etc)
D) water or similar cleaning
