Hard staring when hot 89-91

ok I know there area a million threads on starting problems and I searched but couldnt' find my prob. I have an 89 gtu. It starts right up when cold no problem but once I have been driving it and it is warmed up, then I shut it off for a few minutes, it cranks but won't start. I tried holding the gas pedal all the way to the floor but this doesn't help. It still just cranks with no start. Sometimes I can get it started if I start pushing the gas pedal slowly towards the floor while cranking so it seems as if maybe it's not getting the fuel for some reason? Anyone have a similar problem?

thanks

Probably a (very) common flodding problem

1. Pop hood
2. Go into engine fuse bay and pull top two chips (one red and one green)
3. Crank for 30 seconds
4. Put chips back in
5. It should start up this way almost all the time

If not, you probably have a bad flood. The easiest way to fix this is to push start it, but an ATF will work also

good luck

The cause of the problem is probably leaking injectors. Very common on these cars. You can put in a fuel pump cut-off switch to kill the engine - That'll empty the fuel line to the injectors so they can't leak after the engine stops. There's a thread about how to do it. The permanent fix is to have the injectors rebuilt.

When mine does that I floor it while cranking.

It shuts off the fuel flow to the injectors. Works every time.

I do not think that works in a S4.

thanks guys, I will try that stuff. I was thinking that it wasn't flooding because I would push the pedal to the floor to cut the fuel (on series 5) and it still wouldn't start. But when I would push the pedal just slightly down I could get it started so this would actually be getting it fuel. When it does start, it doesn't blow out any kind of smoke which also led me to belive that it wasn't flooded. I will probably get the injectors cleaned. The odometer reads 190k miles. I just bought the car and it runs very good except for this problem and a bad idle but no hesitation or bucking at all when accelerating or cruizing.

You should run a compressoin test when cold, and then a compression test when "hot" during your hard starting. Also check for cracks in Vac lines and Vac leaks and things like that. Depending on your milage it might be wise to check your injectors and have them cleaned. Good luck.
