to halfbridge or not to halfbridge

well, i got a jdm 13b from osakajdmmotors.com in august. i never did a compression test on it when i picked it up. well i put it in the car and tried to start it, it never started. so i did a comp test and come to find out the rear rotor has no compression. whooohooo, i called up osaka and they wont do anything about it..so i decided to tear down to see what was wrong. first i found the oil pump is scored to hell. sorry didnt take a pic of that...

well, thats all my pics...the rear stationary gear has broken teeth, also on the rear rotor. the rear rotor has a spun bearing... i'm not sure if it would be a good idea to reuse the housings and irons?? it looks like someone rebuilt it cause there were fd corner seal springs( the fatty ones, not the thin wire ones)..what input do you guys have? halfbridge? streetport? not sure..

do you think i can reuse the housings and endplates? i'm thinking of just changing the bearings and i have a used eccentric shaft and rotor.. probably reuse the apex seals andjust get a gasket kit..

or i can get a master kit from atkins, change the bearings, used rear rotor, and bridgeport. did anyone have a halfbridge on stock turbo? if not, then i need alot more **** to buy...

can't really tell, but i would say that one of those housings look's pretty bad and definitely use a new e-shaft. those bearings look horrible so for sure get new ones. when putting a new stationary gear in don't forget to go ahead and throw a new bearing in there as well. get the competition one. and while your at it just replace the front gear bearing as well.

i dunno if i would reuse seals that were in a motor that went thru this haha. get a master kit and have more peace of mind

if you want to go half bridge then be prepared to get a stand alone. the stock turbo will be fine... it's just going to be a choke. but it will work for now.

well, depending on the size of your turbo will determine as to whether do a sp/hb.... if you have a larger turbo that doesnt sppol early, a hp will make it spool sooner, and give you a wider powerband.... and if its a smaller turbo, there is really no need for a halfie.. unless you want the sweet sweet sound of BRAP BRAP BRAP

note.. your the first person to have your battery in the same location as me.. hell, the same battery too

vipers, i thought those dimensions of the battery would fit nicely..if i go hb i'll get a bigger turbo, standalone(undecided what brand), and all other necessities.

vipers- did you reuse your housings and irons or get new ones?

well my housings and irons were good, so my engine builder re-used them.. but every seal was replaced, and i used fd corner seals, and rx8 stationary gears...

heres a pic of my battery location

they were sandblasted, then painted w/ dupli-color "cast-aluminum" paint... looks great, and is holding up very well

There's also pistons.
Also, I think you can technically get a car to run with the stock ecu with a bridge, but it will run like ***.

haha...yeah i have to fix that too....
viper- nice intake manifold and the rest of your engine...i like your battery.it seems more slim than mine..

well i guess im picking up an atkins master kit.. i'll look at these rotors i have, maybe i can use those with new bearings and new stationary gears front and back. does rx8 and fd gears work? also rx8 or fd eccentric? thats all for now...i hope this new project doesnt take that long to finish..even though i have a feeling it will..

Don't you need to do something extra to use the rx-8 gears?

i've decided to go with rx8 e-shaft, rx8 stationary gears and bearings, and stock rotor bearings from mazdatrix. i'll get the rebuild kit from atkins along with a rebuild dvd, higher flow e-shaft oil jets, engine stand adapter.. and about 7000 later, halfbridged monster will be alive.... no telling how long this will take..

im under the impression that you can install some rx8 parts with earlier 13b engines. the rx8 gears are 88.92 for front and 114.42 for the rear.. and they come with new bearings.. these are prices from mazdatrix.com.. and a new rx8 e-shaft is 169.74. that seems pretty cheap compared to almost 400 something for a fd shaft.

the rx8 eshaft will work fine. its also lighter and cheaper, the rear stationary gear doesnt have the oring on it so you'll have to use some sealant.
