GXL vs. GTU

I tried searching the FAQ for this information, and couldn't come up with differences in trim.

Could someone please just list the differences between an S4 GXL and GTU?
Will a GXL with adjustable suspention handle as well as a GTU?

well, the s4 gtu was only produced in 1988... came w/ a aluminum na hood, speed sensitive power steering, different gearing in the tranny, and was the first non turbo to come w/ the turbo wing and aero mirrors...

the gtu should have a little better handling, but not much.... the drag coefficients were also different because of the areo package... .31 drag for the gxl and .29 for the gtu

basically the gxl is the fat lady of the rx7s but has some nice features. gtu is lighter and built to handle.

What is the different gearing? faster? I replaced my 88 gtus tranny with 87 something .. so im guessing I lost all the special tranny ... stuff...

GXL also have 4 piston brake calipers up front and vented rotors all around, GTU only have 2 pistons and solid rear calipers

No, that is wrong.

This is all covered in the Options and standard features sticky thread found at the top of this section. https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/specifications-what-did-2nd-generation-rx-7-come-w-options-standard-features-249616/

Only the 89 and 90 GTU had Single (not 2 pistons- no FC came with 2 piston brakes) front brakes and solid rear rotors.

The 88 GTU came with 4 piston front brakes with vented rear rotors just like all models of the GXL.

and BTW: he asked about the S4 models... which would be 86-88... so the crappy S5 GTU with it's Single piston brakes wouldn't even be brought up

actually... the s5 gtu is basically the base model.... there is nothing special about it! unlike the s4 gtu! i guess the equivalent in s5 terms would be the GTUs model

I drive an S4 GXL and love it. I wouldn't trade my power windows, Automatic Suspension or any of those other special little features for a GTU!

...might take a Turbo, though, if it were in as good of condition...possibly...maybe not...

No he doesn't.

The 88 GTU (S4 came) with 5 lug wheels. The only S4 models to have single piston front brakes came with 4 lug wheels.

So either he has a base model 88 SE or he has a 89 (S5).

But he does not have a 88 GTU.

Man I don't get why everyone is being stupied in this thread. There was no special gearing on the 88 GTU. The 88 GTU uses the same brakes as all other non base models (like the GXL, Sport, GTUs (note the small S), the Turbo, the convertibles.

This is all covered in the WHAT DID MY CAR COME WITH STICKY THREAD found at the top of this section.

Stop posting BS people!

The only difference between the 88 GTU and the 88 GXL was that the GXL had power windows, addustible suspension, a sunroof (which was optional on the 88 GTU) and slightly nicer interior, while the GTU had the S4 aero kit.

There were not differences in brakes, gearing, engine, or even springs.

Thanks for all the responses! And thanks for all the info, Icemark!

I have a couple more questions for you. I just bought my 87 GXL

First, if I have 16" alloys with a 5-bolt pattern, would it be correct to say that I have the original axles, but TII wheels?

Second, I think I've seen some RX7s without dual exhaust, though I could just be imagining it. All I know is, the exhaust system on my car did not come from Mazda. Anyways, would my 87 GXL normally have dual exhaust?

Third, is the GXL suspension in sport mode the same as the suspension on a GTU or TII?

You can say that about the suspension, its technically accurate, as Turbo Models came with "Sport Tuned Suspension." GXL's and all FC's for that matter, came dual exhaust from the factory.

Personally I love my GXL. Power Windows, AAS, whats wrong with that =) 5 lug! hahah.

What about the 5 lug? Is it normal for my car or not?

I must say, short of the engine that's necessitated a rebuild already, I'm in love with my GXL too

It always amazes me how little some RX7 owners know about their cars, although my cousins brothers sister did order her 86 convertible with a turbo!!

No, seriously? Is the 5 lug what was on my car the day it was built?

It'd be nice if I could get a "yes" or a "no", instead of a "It always amazes me how little some RX7 owners know about their cars" or a "5 lug! hahah." That's about as helpful as saying "stupid n00b."
