GXL pros and cons
Hey all, i just want to hear from some ppl that have (or know alot about) second gen GXLs. What is better about them and worse about them from other models excluding the TII (duh)
Cheers
Cheers
everyone says their heavier because of the power equipment..
but by what like.. 60 pounds tops?
(maybe someone can get some facts for me..)
its basically a base model FC with toys for an old man. cruise control, power windows, power sunroof, LSD (not sure if this was offered on the base model) to name a few options
it perfectly suits me and my application for it, so im more than satisfied driving my GXL..

well at the ottawa meet i could keep up with all the turbo's man
the problem is that they get up there quicker than me because theyre running boost..
if they REALLY gas it and go as hard as they can, i can't keep up too well, but its not like they ever get out of sight
the main idea is though that i can hang with the gang without any problems picking up more speed while already going fast.. if that makes sense to ya
bottom line - us n/a's can go as fast, just takes us a tad longer to get up to the speed

i would imagine they are easy to mod, but it depends on what you mean by mod..
i couldnt give you any 0-60 times.. even if i could it wouldnt be that great i wouldn't think.. rx7s aren't designed for drag racing, they're meant for top end speed.. and trust me, they got it!

hah.. 'stangs

i dunno if you could impress him cause ive never met him before..
little mods like intake and such are pretty easy on any vehicle - from what i've been told N/A 13b's get a noticeable difference from an opened up intake..

well by impress i meant be faster than him. So what are some "cheap" mods that could give a noticable gain? cheap meaning good but not to expensive. so would i be faster in both high end and accel.? oh and what is the suspension control thing on GXLs? sry for all the questions but i just want to know if im getting a nice car.
GXLs are nice IMO..
it adjusts the ride height (i believe) but alot of the controls don't work as time ticks by.. and i do believe when you replace the shocks with aftermarket, they no longer work.. but i could be mistaken i haven't looked into it too deeply..
i couldn't tell you many cheap mods.. maybe someone else kicking around can field your question there..
beneficial mods are to open up the exhaust (header rather than bathtub-style stock manifold) and intake for starters..
i'd need more of a description of his mustang to tell you exactly, not only that, but what type of running condition your GXLs engine is in as well.. there's alot of variables..
keep in mind again - rx7s are for top speed, cornering and handling.. i have yet to find another car on the road other than an rx7 that can keep up through the winding roads..
my cavalier feels like its tipping over at 75-80kmph going on an off-ramp, my rx7 can do well over 115kmph and it still feels like its on rails.

hmmm, ok the engine in it is a 5 or 6 year old engine, gets low use and is owned by an old guy, so its in good condition. um the mustang of which i speak is a v6 150 hp 150 ft lb of torgue and it is also in good condition, so the stang has 10 hp less but more torque. um the exhaust is not stock (i dont think) and is also a few years old (for the rex).
thanks for all the help

they adjust suspension stiffness. TIIs are tons more fun and quicker and you would need one of those to impress your mustang buddy. I have tons of money and work done to my N/A and its only maybe a low 14second car, with the same money in a TII i would have a better handling and better acceleration (probably a low 13 second car maybe quicker). Bottom line, unless you just love N/As (for some reason, many say for autoX, but id still want a TII in that), you want a TII. Put it this way, which would you rather have, a 3.8L mustang, or a 4.6L mustang?

I would think a Rex would kill that Stang. Me and my friend spanked a 5.0 Stang in my 88 535 BMW, by about half a car, my car is power every thing, 4 door, and stock, and auto. so i dont think u would have a problem impressing him with a Rex

My first fc was a 90 GXL, and I have the fastest N/A in the group. There was me, 2 verts, an 88 GTU and a 88 se. Some of the other cars had mods, mine was bone stock ecepvt for a high flow cat. My car was the fastest. And every car is a base model with options. The GXL is the Luxury edition of the RX-7 line up. Thicker insulation, premium audio, the works. If I get another N/A it wil be a GXL. I have a87 TIi right now with the parts from my GXL on it
You look at my GXL now and you know It's not one anymore.
Btw, the AAS sucks. I hardly believe they worked right from when they were new. If you can, remove It when you can. You are better off using the Harness Plugs, leading to the Actuators, as good 12v Ign sources anyway.
Also, If you don't replace the stock GXL Struts with the overly priced original ones, you could kiss that feature goodbye.

Pros: Loaded with options, better seats, power equipment, cool struts (if they still work), and a biggie: an LSD (if it is not worn out).
Cons: Heavier than the base model but the exact amount is not certain. Most of the mid 14 1/4 time NA FC's I have seen here were base model S4's.
Notice that the pros outnumber the cons.
