gxl computer

I bought my 88 gxl at a charity auction with a sign on it that said will run with car spray, i brought it home and with yalls help i found it had a bad fuel pump. Well tonight i called the previous owner and he told me the computer was messed up. the said the car would start and run good, but as soon as it got warmed up it would shut right off. the previous owner bought the car for parts only so he did not mess with it.
My thing is i know this is a gxl and it is considerably different than the 2 87 bases i had do i have to find another gxl computer to fix it or will another fc computer fit?

My second question is has anyone else had this problem and how did you deal with it?

Last of all do you think its worth fixing or parting this car out, it has 196k 5-speed, NA 13b, slight body damage on the front will need a fender and some bending some mounts back straight, the master cylinder seems to be leaking a little. The paint is deige and has the clear-coat coming off in some spot, bad fuel pump. i only paid $275 and i bought it mostly for an investment to fis a little and get a little profit out of it. so i guess my thing is do yall think its worth pursueing or will it just turn into a bottom-less pit for cash?

Is it a 5spd? Then one of your SE ECU's will run it fine. I'm not sure if the autos have a different ECU.

But I've never heard of an N/A ECU crapping out...especially an S4 ECU. I've heard of bad solder points, but not just a flat broke ECU. Take a fuel pump out of one of your SE's and put it in the GXL and see if it'll start. Then sell her as a whole...it'll be easier than trying to pawn off 200k mile parts.

~or...swap all the drivetrain components and anything else you like about the GXL into one of your SE's.

I am really over my head with this electical stuff what is the best book to buy? some one has been working on the car a little too. ill be getting a fuel pump anyway i think so i can start it up to show someone it runs and shut it off before it heats up. do you think it could be a senor that is acting up?

The other computers should work unless the fuel injectors are the wrong impedence. I believe the 88 GXL has a N327 ECU. The numbers are on it. I am not totally sure, but I think the N 326 will work fine as well.

first off, its best not to rip people off. for that simple fact, i personally don't want to help you. if you promise to be honest, maybe people like me will chime in.

im not saying im scamming people, im saying i want to prove the motor at least has something inside it. mechanically the motor should be good, but you cant prove that unless it will run.

You think that ECU will work for a 5-speed?

it would be scamming if you deny that anything was wrong with it or " forget" to say that it shuts off once warmed up :p But thats just my opinion.

As far as the ecu, i think the auto's are a lil different, can't really remember, sorry =(

did you read any of the posts? i copied two quotes directly. he plainly stated that the car shuts off when its warm. is that a problem? hrmm, yes. then he says he wants to fix the fuel pump so he can start it and shut if off before it gets warm.

must i make this into a scenario? lets say youre buying a used car. the salesman says it runs fine, but there's no warranty. he starts it, idles, runs, sounds fine. great, you buy it for X amount of money. you leave the place of business, drive... *whoops* car warms up and shuts off. are you mad?? no, of course not, you weren't scammed.

if he's not trying to rip someone off, then great. but look at what he's written. starts the car and shuts it off before it has time to die (when fully warmed). that _should_ raise a red flag right there.

if its sold as a parts car with a motor that can start, then thats fine. but deliberately saying that he plans to shut it off before it gets warm is pretty blunt. it should be sold as a parts car that can start, but not run (however its chosen to be worded). but starting it and shutting it off before it warms up is hiding a problem. this is bad, mmmkay?

OK, its stupid to try that because most people I seel cars too let the car get good and warm and see if it over heats at all, specially with my SA. But anyway, the reason i was asking bout the GXL computer was to fix this problem. Saying to shut it off quick was just an idea, you kow like a sarcastic remark. im am honest with everything I remember while selling my cars and the reason I am having trouble selling my 79 is that I said I couldnt fix the brakes. the only thing I dont tell my buyers is where i got the car and how much i paid for it, I think thats just none of their business. I do say though, if i know if the car has been up north or not. I am hoping to leave for a junkyard to get another fuel-pump and an ECU in hopes of fixing it.
