Grind when shifting to first

I have 86 GXL 5spd, and if i try to downshift from second to first when i'm going around 15 or 20 mph.. i get a grinding noise and it doesn't go into gear smoothly... it's not that big of a deal for normal driving but i took it to an autocross last weekend and it got kinda annoying...

the clutch slips if i get on it too hard and needs to be replaced before too long... all other gears work fine in shifting up or down.

My friend says it probably a synchro, but from some of what I've searched for sounds like it might be a pilot bearing...

any other ideas? thanks!

yeah i know... its fine for normal driving just when i wanted to down shift at an autocross i couldn't...

yes it would make sense not being ableto shift into first when moving... guess i should have asked if this is normal behavior of the tranny..

All manual tranmissions that I have driven hate you if you try to shift into 1st while the car is moving...
