Grey sludge in turbo inlet duct -- what does that mean?
I'm prep'ing an RE engine that I bought to go in my FC. I pulled some of the plastic ductwork off of one of the turbo inlets and there is this grey sludge just pooled in there... What the heck does that mean??
Is it just the oil in the turbo seeping out after time or what? Or am I looking at a larger prob?
any help is appreciated.
thanks!!

Larger prob, I'd be guessing its from the compressor wheel hitting the housing and also oil leaking out past the seals, Grey = metal shavings, sludge = Oil.
check the play in the turbo how much does it move?

How long has the engine been sitting out of a car?
Chances are that if there was stuff that was in there like oil or something, it would have dried up or spilled out since it last ran, so its probly just junk that gathered in there while the engine was sitting out.

Not sure how long it's been sitting. Shipped from Japan ... I'd estimate a year or so, but really don't know. If I can get ahold of rotaryworks, I'll ask. Anyone know Shane Smith? His website seems to be hosed as it's completely blank except for a title page -- haven't heard from him for a bit either. Anyway, I'll try to find out.
I'll also try to get the turbos removed and check the play. Need to convert to non-seq for now anyway. Btw, anyone have a write up on that for the RE?
thanks for the responses.

Well I haven't gotten the turbos off yet -- crap there's a lot of little freaking hoses and junk in the way. So I still need to check the play.
Anyway, I did get a little closer and that same sludge is coming out of the intake side of the turbo... But it also seemed like a lot of water -- not coolant smelling though. Well not a lot, a few tablespoons though. Guess I just need to get these things off and inspect them a little closer.
I think I have a link for the non-seq conversion for FDs. I guess it should be close enough to figure out. Actually seems pretty simple once I got the intake piping off. Basically a little vacuum operated flapper between them. So I suppose don't connect that vacuum line up and remove the flapper and I'm good to go.
