GReddy V-Spec Intercooler thoughts and Q&A

Ive had my intercooler installed and running for over a month now, so i wanted to share some thoughts about the kit overall. To put things into perspective, my motor is new, have a K2RD radiator with a stock 87-88 water pump housing and themostat. Im am using a T04 hybrid right now which is basically a stock turbo with a bigger compressor. I have no a/c and no powersteering.

Fitment:
The core fitment around the bumper as shown here:

Its very tight and requires trimming of the bumper. An 87-88 bumper requires a bit more trimming and will bulge the bumer cover out just a bit. You CAN use the bumper reinforcement, and i encourage you to do so. Its a tighter fit with the reinforcement, but will save your front end in an accident. The core physicall bolts to the car using stock holes on the car, no drilling.
The holes the piping goes through is much different than the older kit. The hot side goes right by the fuel pump resistor and the cold side goes though the hole by the battery box. Shown here:

I recommend using a smaller battery, like i did, or re-locating the battery to the storage bins. It gives you much more room to play around with.
The kit WILL work with a/c and powersteering, but it will require some re-work to get it to fit. Keep in mind this is japanese spec kit, their cars have the brake master on the other side. If you have power steering, you WILL need to have someone re-weld the elbow pipe to the throttle body. If you dont have power steering, its a much easier fit.

Turbo and BOV:
the kit is designed to work with the STOCK turbo. Whether you have a stock turbo or a some big turbo kit, the kit will work fine. You do need to make provisions for the BOV. I had a TiAl welded to the pipe off the turbo. Shown here:

Installation:
The enlarging of the holes for the pipes will take the longest. A dremel some saftey glasses and about an hour you should be done. Removing the front clip is easy, about 15-20 minutes of removing 10mm bolts it comes right off. The rest of the time is spent dry fitting the kit and see how the whole thing is gonna fit and what needs to be changed.

Performace:
While i dont have any numbers to show ya, i am very impressed with the kit. I have no feeling of any heat soak no matter hot is out side. The car runs cool, no overheating problems. And i feel very very little lag. Its hardly noticeble. Even with the stock turbo, you will not feel any substantial lag. Overall, i am very happy with the kit. Its a deal considering it comes with a huge throttle body adapter. Though a bit more complex than the stocker, its worth the effort. Im a happy owner. =]

Would it fit with the stock front bumper? How much did it run you and where from? Thanks.

It fits the stock bumper. I got mine from rx7.com, not sure if they have any left.

Thanks man, it helps alot, I"m installing my kit right now.

The only thing you left out is how the IC core hooks up at the bottom to the chassis with the brakets that came with the kit. I guess I'll have to figure that one out unless you have more pics.

Thanks
C

yah, i couldnt get the camera at the correct angle to get a decent shot of that. Its really easy though. I bolted the core with the top bracket and the positioned the lower brackets. I had to bend the lower ones just a tad and it fit perfect.
