I understand that, and I am not trying to dissuade you, but that swap is alot more difficult then you really want to get into. You stand to lose power, and functionality. Just some friendly advice, get an S5 motor.

Well the main point that the most effect is the fact that S4 engines run a mechanical oil pump whereas the S5 runs an electric one. There are also all kinds of little things that would make it so much easier to just stick with a S5.

You definately DO NOT want to do that... Get an S5 motor. Sure.. its possible. but its more headache than you are ready for.

IT is possible to swap JUST the shortblock, run an 86-8 shortblock with all 89-91 externals. You have to keep the 86-88 flywheel, keep the 86-8 temp sensor and plug, and you have to grind about 1/4" of material off of the rear iron in one spot to clear the block-hugger s5 intake manifold. Other than that it will work without any major issues at all. Still, most of the earlier motors have even more miles than the one that you have already, so you're going to the trouble of putting in a motor that's already on it's last legs.

BTW, there is a guy in the FS section selling a newly rebuilt 89-91 engine, fairly near you as I recall. Check it out.

i wish i had $800 to throw on one, basically looks like either this car or my truck will get sold now due to one or the other has to be fixed so i will have a way to work in 2 weeks when i start my new job, the whole intention with this car was to drive it to work until i could get my truck up and running and then make this one my project

800 is CHEAP for a strong used, or a budget rebuilt engine. Just the shortblock of that reman he is selling costed about $2400 from mazda, plus core exchange. Not to mention the manifolds and external stuff, and the assembly and gaskets of said external stuff.

Sounds like you didnt know what you were getting into...you bought an rx7 with a tired engine to use as your reliable daily driver to replace an unreliable one? What were you thinking?

I am not making fun of your misfortune, but no one would suggest that you buy a honda civic as a dragrace car, or a pickup truck as an autocross vehicle, or a ford festiva to haul things around. By the same token, buying an old original engine rx7 for a reliable daily driver is not a good idea.
