Got rev, shifts gears, doesn't move

Ok, this is what I've got going on...

What the car currently does: car starts, idles fine, revs up fine, gearshift can move to the various gears, car does no move.

Symptoms leading up to event: when accelerating in gear, the engine would surge slightly worsening to somewhat over this year. Suddenly Saturday night, the car would not launch until considerably higher RPM's than normal. Then it required higher and higher RPM's just to move the car until it would not move at all no matter what the RPM's.

Any help as to what this might be?

I'll be the first to admit I'm no mechanic whatsoever. So, even if this came off as an incredibly stupid question, I appreciate the feedback. It's less than anything I was fearing...

could you smell anything during this?

if you want confirmation pull your starter out of the trans, your clutch material should fall out of the hole :P

The smell was like pretzels as I was driving. I thought it was possibly coolant and was fearing the apex seals... I later smelled burning clutch, but I thought I had smoked the clutch on the 6 pushing the RX-7 into the garage.
