Sorry to tell ya but you are in for some work there.

I had mine done by a mechanic I know, its too much of a pain to do it, he hates doing it and he works on cars all the time, that just lets you know what a pain it is.

If your dad has not done it before it might take him a while.

NOT FUN

its not that bad. my friend and I changed it in a couple of hours. Taking off your exhaust after the Y pipe will make things easier. Drop the sub-frame a bit, enough to get to the two screws on the front of the mount, and loosen them. Then drop the sub-frame some more and un-screw the rest of the mount off. Then do the complete opposite to put it back on Sounds easier than it is but it isnt as bad as everyone makes it sound.

Maybe I can sneak in a quick question here as I was just about to search as to exchanging rear ends. Is it necessary to drop the entire cross members or from the point you guys are at, just remove the half shafts, drive shaft, then the carrier? I am replacing a standard with a TII LSD in a 89 GTU.

So I don't have to ask these ?s here, could someone recommend the best service manual? Mazda or an aftermarket? Don't care about the price as good documentation is more important to me.

TIA,

Hank Terry

The differential can be removed about like you described, without removing the subframe assy. You still have to lower the subframe down just a touch though. There is a free download of an 88 factory manual at http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/Technical_I...ice_manual.htm and it has a good description of the removal. I bought a 87 fsm from Mazdatrix, which by the way is superior to the 88 book, and consider it much better than a Haynes, although the Haynes in its own peculiar way has some good points. Fsm is much better though. Unfortunatly my brother bought a manual from Mazdatrix for his 90 something convertible, and JEEEZ, that is almost pitiful. Its thick and the size of pocket book. Totally inferior. The 87 has schematics that fold out, colored, and easier to decipher. As in USER FRIENDLY, and 8and 1/2 by 11. Try downloading the fsm and see what you think. Just download the section you seem to be interested in for a quicker download.
Pardon my ignorance, but will the halfshaft still fit when you change b/t the two? I don't know, but something I read in the past makes me wonder if turbo and NA have the same bolt pattern on the halfshafts?????

Thank you!

The TII and NA H/S are different and I did purchase them with the TII LSD. Driveshaft is beefier also.

That was great news. I really was not looking forward to messing with the brake lines and other stuff.

I should probably ask about this high performance mount. (Lots to learn) Now is a good time to install when things are apart.

Thanks again,

Hank

Btw - front yoke on the TII driveshaft will not work in a n/a trans (it's bigger). There is no driveshaft that will work. You need to either have one made locally, using the two you have, or re-drill the TII pinion flange bolt pattern to the smaller pattern of the n/a driveshaft -- just rotate the pattern 45 degrees.

Well that answers one of the unknowns that I was wondering about. The car is an automatic but that probably won't matter I guess. Thanks for the tip about drilling the flange!

Is the heavy duty mount a product you carry?

Thanks,

Hank
