Good idea or not?

Ok guys heres my situation. I have a 87 n/a. I have 2 different options. For $200 I can buy a 87 POS T2 and do the conversion, I will need a new motor as well $800(jspec).Or I could sell my car for 4k,(4k for a base model n/a? hahaha).yes its that nice. and go buy another T2 or put about 5k down on a 300ZXTT. I love the rx-7 but these are my options. What would you do?

Crap, where do you guys find t2's for $200?? I'd do a conversion if your car is that nice and you want it faster. For the same money into a T2 it probably wouldn't be as nice. If you don't want to do the work or don't think you could, then go for the 300z.

I think I can do it but i dont want to spend my life on my car for the next year. I'm off to marine corps basic next may. Oh the 200 t2- lemme desciribe it for you, bashed windows, engine bay taken apart and thrown into the car turbocharger is gone no seats no rust but paint is horrible, buffing it would make it worse. +500$ for 3rdgen wheels with goodyear eagle f1 225/35/ZR16.
car hasent ran in 2 years. 140000 miles cough cough POS.

I know the 300zxtt is heavy but I respect that car. so would you do the conversion with all that said?

I would pay $200 for the parts to do a complete conversion(with wiring harness but not including the engine of course) if it was in decent condition. Probably even if I had to rebuild the tranny myself too. That's just me though, and I would make the time. If you don't have time, obviously your choice would be according to that problem.

If your current NA works, I would keep it and use any extra money to maintain it. Please don't try to keep up with the "cool" crowd at your school, as they usually end up with pathetic lives because they can't manage their money properly. Following their lead will only ruin your life. Your military recruiter can expand on this if you don't believe me.

Also, it is not such a great idea to spend a lot of money on a car right now. You can't use the car in boot camp, and you could get an overseas assignment for all you know, in which case your car is just going to be a liability as it sits at home or in storage. You can always get a nice car later on once you are in a stable duty station in the US and you have a stable budget plan. It will be easy to get a loan once you are on the military payroll, but please have your sergeant help you out so that you don't bite off more than you can chew, as the car dealerships will rape you if they can. FYI, most large bases have an excellent auto shop that you can use for very reasonable rates.

Keep in mind that whatever you do, the car will need to pass a military safety inspection. The inspections are given if you want to drive it on post, and if you want to drive the car to your pass/leave destination. The inspection includes horn, all lights (including license plate lighting), wipers, tires, windshield, and a couple of other things that I can't think of right now. It is of vital importance that the car's lighting system works so you can turn off the headlights and still run the "parking" lights when you approach the front gate.

Also, if you are late to formation, your rear end will be in a sling. (Your rear end, not the car's, lol). If the car breaks down once, it usually isn't much of a problem. If it breaks down a couple of times, your career will be in jeopardy. Therefore, you do NOT want a car that is unreliable as your primary transportation.

whoa...words of wisdom come crashing down on a young mans dream..very respectable position to take. sounds like you have experience.

i was gonna babble on alot about the z and the 7( cuz i have one of each) but after evils post..i say..go with the reality check and wait a few years to start pouring money into a car....( cuz then the rx-8 parts will be cheaper and more common)lol( or the 350z will be convertible) win... win situation

Yes, those are words of wisdom based on military experience. However, there is no dream crashing going on here, but rather a modified plan for achieving the dream.

I hope you are keeping up with your PT so you don't go to basic like a girlie-man.

actually a very good way to put it... a modified plan to acheive what his dreams are..i know if i could have modified my dreams at the time i may have held out for the 350 vert or other options....but my dream only started a year after the 300z was discontinued..in 97...way before the 350 or the rx8( i cant lie though..i really wanted an fd..but never thought about modifying my dreams to conceive it, **** , 7 years later and i still cant afford to get a 15-20,000 fd with more miles than id feel comfy having for the money!)

you are a wise man..i have alot of respect for your posts!! keeping it real
