Good find on a 1986 rex?

Hey there, I've found an RX-7 in town, and was curious what others would think of it. It's an '86, not sure what model, with 129,736 miles on it, that's going for a great price, even on my poor college student budget. Only thing wrong with it is that it won't start. The guy that has it said it was working fine the night before, and the next morning, it wouldn't start, only cranks. He got a compression check done on it, and said the numbers were low, but gave no specifics on what they were. Besides that, the car is in really great condition. Been in Texas for about a year and a half, and in California before than since it was bought.

Some misc. pictures I took of it are here.

So, what is this car going for you are asking? All of $650. Good deal, bad deal, what do you think?

-Matt

Edit: it's not a base model, err...what is it?

My 2 cents.

Pros:
Clean lookin car
Stock/unmodified looking

Cons:
Base model, 4 lugs
No storage boxes
Owner says compression is low (check for yourself, if nothing else, pull the plugs and put a finger over the hole while cranking)
Tranny's a ? too w/o being able to drive it

$650's a bit much with a questionable engine IMO.

Here's a couple from autotrader $500 GXL

Newer SE

"needs rotor repair" lol

it may be just flooded. Take out the plugs and see if they are soaked in gas.
If they are dry, then I would move on.

If the compression check is done on a flooded engine, then compression will be very low.

Try to push start it or use the unflooding procedure.

Do a search on 'unflooding' if you don't know how to unflood.

yes while it is flooded the compression will be very low, and the milage makes it questionable about an apex seal.

What should I be feeling if I do this? I guess if the plugs are soaked in gas, then it's just flooded and I don't have to go through this(and I can call myself lucky ).

Also, wasn't sure of the model as a I was talking to a friend last night and he said it looked like a 2+2, just the seats were folded down.

It sounds like its flooded. How long has it been since it ran? Do a search on "unflooding"

Or use this..http://www.rx7.com/tech/unflood-fc.html

Good lookin car, but be careful..Easy flooding is a sign of things to come! Get it warmed up then do a compression check.... I would probably offer him $500 for it myself.

Damn all you people in the south....my 7 is a base model, but we stole rims and seats to make it look like that car. The only difference is that mine is starting to rust and the paint looks like crap! Stupid fading paint....oh well. At least mine runs. I would try to find a different rex if you ask me, something a little bit newer just because of rims and brakes etc. It is such a pain in the *** with the 4 bolt pattern.

check for gas on the plugs. if its flooded, go buy it right now its easy to fix. if not skip it unless ur up for a rebuild. if u get a good 2nd gen for 650 i will hate you.
