idle is too low, misconception is that lower idle produces less emissions which is false, it allows the cats to cool off too much. keep the idle as high as possible while still in the peramters for the test, usually 800-1000RPMs.

It can vary. I passed my emissions test with a 480rpm idle, best results I had ever gotten, failed 5 times before that at 750-800 rpms.

I did a lot of playing with idle, timing, the injection of the airpump, and leaning it out to get it to work, though, but the lower idle showed a big drop in HC's for me.

Well good luck... I have yet to hear how my car did... My temp inspection ran out on the 23rd when it took it into the dealership to get the seat belts fixed... so they are inspecting it... so I am at their mercy.

BTW that's a weird way to measure HC's, is that normal for other states too? Mine measures parts/million where the limit is 250 or something like that for cruise.

no emisions testing in Maine woohooo, only thing they check for visually is a cat. . and most of the time they don't even pick the car up that high. just high enough to check wheel bearings and such usually. Go Maine!
