Going to buy a jspec how to visually inspect...
Ok im going in a few hours to pick up a jspec s5 engine from an importer in my area. What should i look for?
How do I check for shaft play in the turbo?
He will do a compression test on the motor right in front of me.
So basically look for motor that the intercooler isn't crushed
What about the turbo manifold dont they commonly crack somewhere?
What about the tps or any other sensors can i test it?

Regardless, if you see any visible damaged or not, you will still have to rebuild the engine. Just for the fact that you do not know how long has it been sitting out of a fc or if it has any internal problems. my two cents are just rebuild it with a specialist in RE and have him tell you if he sees anything wrong with it ?

There are visible differents between both If you own a s5 you will be able to tell that if the engine that you are going to buy such as the location on where you fill the oil to your engine or the radiator top connector hose. jus look at your engine and its details even it the new engine is a s5 13bt it still shares common look with a s5 13b

Visually. they are pretty close.
S5's have..
-A more gradual entry into the TMIC core(kind of conical) while S4's are just straight pipe(more of just a cyliner/pipe).
-Electronic boost controller mounted on the oil fill neck.(small thing the size of a certs pack and has some blue plastic on it if I remember right)
-The knock sensor is also mounted differently. rotor housing instead of intake plate(or vice versa/can't remember/someone might be able to chime in) The actual control is built into the S5 ecu while S4's are an external box placed inside the passenger fender/door area
The fuel injectors will have an oval plug while S4's are rectangular.
The OMP is huge and will have an electronic plug on it. S4's are purely mechanical and should have no plug.
After you confirm it's a S5(they have mislabeled them before...)
You have to remove the hotside of the turbo to check for cracks in it.
Here is the crack I'm talking about. This will eat your turbine and destroy the turbo.
Shaft play is easy. It shoudl pull forward and back a little as norm but side play where it may touch the compressor is bad.
If you can pull the exhaust manifold then turn the engine and try and see the color/condition of the rotors and apex seals.
A compression test will be somewhat useless since to get a real reading you need the engine near warm/running temps.
TPS checking. Bring a multimeter and search for TPS adjustment to see how to read them.
I usually try to dissuade people from just buying Jspec's and throwing them in their car.
I don't like the idea of spending all that time installing an engine you really have no clue about. Rebuilding it will give you a clean slate to work with so there are less variables to make the car run bad.

look for the basics. sensors, manifold, intercooler, turbo, comp. it will give you an idea of whether or not the car has been wrecked or just sitting there. if the guy will let you dissasemble the turbo definitely do what ^^^^^^^^ said. with a flash light you can see a little bit of the inside of the housing and the rotors themselves. OMP, EBC, knock box are all obvious about the s5. you do not HAVE to rebuild but if the comp is good, but do set the time and money aside just in case. other things can go wrong.

hey driftin8ez... was that just the motor or did you also get a tranny?
Just a complete longblock. It is a bit pricey but the place was 20 mins from my house as apposed to ordering it from osaka and having no recourse for a blown motor except for phone calls.
