Question Glowing exhaust system!!

So I went to this new housing development that has just the pavement laid down for some driving fun this evening.

After about 5 minutes of solid flogging on the car. Lots of full throttle on the boost driving. I stopped and popped the hood to let it cool.

Well, like usual the turbo was glowing. Then I wondered how far back the glow went. It went from the downpipe, to the pipe to the cat, the high flow cat and I looked into my N1 Duals. It was RED glow in there to!!

Is that anywhere normal? The whole damn thing was glowing. Maybe I am running to rich. And there is just raw fuel buring.

Any ideas?

James

your downpipe and turbo can glow while driving w/a bad a-seal due to the unignited fuel flying out , but not so hot that it still glowing by the time you've poped the hood

Any turbo will glow especially 300z's just on regular driving but you can associate it with being rich and that is the extra fuel being burnt dont worry it is ok

Any exhaust, whether on a turbo or not, can be made to glow with sustained high output. I've seen plenty of photos of all different kinds of engines being full-load dyno tested with the exhaust glowing bright yellow. I've even done it myself on a engine dyno with an NA Nissan SR20, but we only let it get to a cherry red glow!
The most impressive one I've seen was at a legal burnout competition at night. An Datsun 1200 pick-up with a BP 13B did two minute burnout that caused to entire exhaust to glow bright yellow right to the tip!

The intercooler only cools the intake and won't have significant effects on exhaust temp. When you heat steel to well over 700degC (as full-load exhaust temps are) it will glow yellow, no matter what you do. It's quite normal.

Oh my dear gawd, that's hot!! Now I have yet another reason to stay NA. Although I HAVE seen my precats glow after I left my GXL idling in place for about 10 minutes...
