Ghetto CAI?

Ok guys im trying to modify my car which is a 88 vert. So far I have ported it, running straight pipe with presilencer from racing beat with exhaust all the way back, hks struts and lowered it. So now I need more HP and I know cold air does this. My question to you is whats the diff between the K&N kit and putting a adapter on the mass air flow sensor and sticking a 25.00 air flow cone on there? Besides the price will the K&N kit be better? How i see it either way its getting more air flow. So if you can help, thanks in advance!

Vahn

search the username "1987RX7Guy" for his CAI Idea. I'm not sure if Santiago is still trying to sell his CAI. Its a great idea/design, and had high interest... and as usual with any new RX-7 part, the guys never delivered (bought it).

hack saw, remove windshield washer fluid, make hole a bit bigger, run home depot pipes down there, wrap em in insulator tape, put on cone filter, home depot coupler to the stock afm, but try to keep the afm in the stock position as gravity and having it at an angle will create a difference, then tadda...ghetto cai!

would there be any cons from mounting the AFM right at the TB elbow then running pipe into a filter (like a cold air intake but instead of the AFM being mounted in between the 2 pipes having it right at the TB)???....

What's the point? The only change would be the extra heat experienced by the AFM.

And that is not "like a cold air intake". A piece of pipe is not a cold air intake. A cold air intake is any method that ensures only outside air, and not engine bay air, enters the intake. The name is a clue...

you didnt understand it, i said a pipe like a cold air intake meaning it gets cold air (like it running down above the splash guard and having a cone filter on it) and taking the AFM and mounting it next to the TB instead of being in between the 2 pipes, IMO it would look better but would it hurt the AFM?...

Not a bad idea... my window washers don't work so that tank is sitting in the engine bay for nothing. Thanks for the idea... I've been wanting to make a custom CAI for a while now =P

The AFM should be kept away from heat, so it should be left basically where it is. How would this look any better?

There's a door that opens depending on airflow. So... gravity will mess up how the door opens unless its level.

gravity affects both the s4 and s5 afm, so trying to keep it level is a good idea, i noticed a big difference on mine just by driving with it titled down, then rigging a way to keep it level.

oh yeah lol, make sure to remove all receipts from ur pipes because when u start the car they will get stuck in the afm and flood the car to death lol, that was freakin scary. but thats what u get for being retarded.
