Getting tired of rubbing the soot out of my bumper.
Ever since I switched to a midpipe in place of hi-flo cat, my rear bumper requires buffing out of this soot that starts out dark yellow and builds up to a blacker appearance. it's most noticeable around the where the tips protrude and under the rear spoiler near the corners. It doesn't wash off, I have to lightly buff it out.
I have an Autometer A/F gauge and it reads high yellow (stoich) to just into green (rich).
What can I do to keep from having to buff this bumper every weekend? My car's white, so it gets noticeable in a few days.

You can do what the people with rice do, get those little metal plates and put them on the bumper just above where the exhaust exits. Not sure how it would look on a FC but you never know.

yeah I've got an AE (or fake AE, nobody really knows) and the back bumper is pretty nasty yellow by the exhaust. hollowed cats do a nasty job. I'm putting a downpipe mid pipe on sometime over the next month so I don't expect it to improve too much...
Since it's just a plastic bumper, would bleach work? flame away if thats a dumb question...

I haven't the slightest idea if this will work, but...
Try a product from Geddex called Burnout Guard. It is meant to spray onto the quarter panels to allow burnt rubber from burn-outs to just wipe off.
Might work... or maybe a cooking spray? That might blacken easier though.
Also, there are inhibitors in auto tranny treaments to prevent carbon from forming in the fluid... maybe wipe on some of that?

Gotta love this board - 4 response in 30 minutes. Actually, I had thought about the metal cutouts. I wouldn't consider them "rice" if they serve the function.
I think what would improve things is if maybe I do a couple coats of wax after I clean it next time. Then maybe it won't have such an absorbative (think that's a word-too lazy 2 check) quality.

first thing I'm going to do when my car gets back on the road (hopefully this weekend) after a 4.5 month sit is go at it with Meguire's deep crystal 3 stage stuff. That should do a decent job but I'm not counting on it to get rid of the yellow completely.
It's wicked stuff though, did wonders for my red GX. I thought it looked good after a good wash and wax. Then my roommate introduced me to deep crystal. Talk about a huge difference... Wont be so dramatic on white but it's just such a great finish. Takes an entire friggin day though...

Maybe you are going about the solving the problem wrong.
Instead of trying to fix after the problem, maybe you just have to stop poluting so much, fix the car from running so rich and put the cat back in

FedRex, your post has been in the back of my mind for a while.
Was flipping through Trade-A-Plane and found some stuff you might be able to use. RejeX claims to prevent exhaust stains and makes bugs easy to remove. Guess the bug part isn't important unless you drive backwards a lot. The product is used on airplanes.

Maybe this can help you.
