Getting power From an N/A

Ok first off, search didnt work to good.

Secondly, I have $5,000 to work with. I would like to get a turbo, but the rising gas prices wont allow me to do that.

So Im wondering besids exauhst and porting and what not, what else can i do?

Not much to do other than porting the intake and an exhaust.

I guess you could go with supercharging.

whats wrong with turbo? you may get better gas mileage if you cruise the car and not punch it all day

Its an s4.

I dont know gas prices are in the states, but here in alberta its 90 cents a litre for 87, and its over a dollar for premium, and goverment isnt expecting the prices to go down anytime soon.

Otherwise the first thing i would do is swap for a turbo engine.

You can do a streetport, exhaust, and use an SAFC to get 160-170 rwhp with 25++ mpg on 87 octane. It's been done by a few of us; mine didn't even need a full exhaust to do it.

supercharging would be hella tight
if you go standalone, keep in mind that some standalones (and SAFC's) allow you to run a hi and a low throttle map. Use "low" for daily driving, "high" for everything else. Neat-o, eh?

If you have $5k to play with, put in a 13BT and save the remainder of the money for gas money. We're not talking about 40mpg vs. 10mpg, we're talking about perhaps a 20% difference in fuel economy. If you're that concerned you can drive the car for fuel economy and make up that difference.

if you want horsepower and gas mileage you need to get another car because the 13b NA will give you neither.

the prices are not going down, ever.

instead of making more power, get more bang for your buck

strip the car a little of stuff you don't need or use.
get lightweight wheels and some grippy tires
install a lightweight flywheel

etc

I second the stand alone motion, not matter what you end up doing to the car, a stand alone will let you do it. Porting is always a must if you want to extract all of the HP out of a NA!

Save your money, get a racing beat exhaust, it'll pay off when you dont have to do anything when your precat launches into your main cat. Maybe invest in a megasquirt if you get bored, 200 bucks, solder it together yourself. Once you got the hang of the megasquirt, you'll be able to decide what you want to do, opens up alot of options.

You have an S4 so...

You can swap a S5 Intake manifold onto your S4 Block. This requires slight modification but adds alot of power. POssibly 10+. Extends your power band to near 7500.

High flow exhaust helps ALOT! I had removed my cats and all that was left was the stock muffs. After replacing those with straight through muffs, the mid to high end power was unbelievable. Must have gained over 8hp with that or more.

True Cold air intake. Make some brakets for the radiator to move it back toward the engine (if you have an EFAN) so you can run piping in front of the bumper for a cold air intake

Make sure your AUX ports are working. On alot of S4s, owners dont even relize they are not working.

You dont need to get megasquirt or anything like that. On a N/A with no major mods such as porting. You can easily go with a Apexi SAFC2 and gain close to 10-30 hp depending on your motor.

Don't bother moving the radiator around, the cold air intake isolated from the engine bay would be adequite and much more cost friendly and less time consuming. Running an e-fan would not free up ANY power (maybe .5 and just tax an already overtaxed sotck alternator. You can run the piping easily without moving around the radiator. That solution is pretty stupid if you ask me.

Also a Megasquirt costs the same as a SAFC and can control ignition timing along with multiple other options. An SAFC would allow simpler tuning however. Its how much time you want to spend tuning honestly. Both costing nearly the same.

A SAFC would give you 5-15 more HP and 2-4MPG better then stock. Not 10-30, if it was so, wouldn't everyone have 30 more HP SAFC tuned cars?
