General engine swap question

I have a 1990 non turbo convertible that I am swaping a motor from a 1988 non turbo coupe. I assume i have to use the older intake setup with harness and change the computer due to the change in egr design and intake ports, or can i use the newer intake setup on an older engine and perhaps block off the egr port on top of the engine.
I have changed the front cover and water pump housing from the 90 engine to the 88 mtr. Was i wrong in changing that?
I also could use a better understanding on how to identify the engine types.
Any help would be apreciated thanks.

I'm new to this also and not trying to do what you are attempting but this link should help you out. A lot of people on here may not respond if your question has been covered. Try to dig around the forum archives for this info..theres a ton of info on switching NA to turbo. Hope this helps. http://www.aaroncake.net/RX-7/naturbo.htm
