what could be the problem?
114k miles, 1991, manual.

I would start with the thermostat, next check for clogged hoses or a clogged radiator... Low coolant?

replace the thermo, take it to a shop and has the coolant system flushed, then check the FAQ section on how to check for coolant leaks, hell do a full tune up

~$300 give or take for a nice aftermarket

Otherwise, hit the FS/FT section and find someone parting out a S5 with a decent used rad.
