Gear ratios and serial numbers

I've got an 86 GXL automatic, Just wondering if I could tell what gear set is in the back by ther serial number? Was it only the convertible auto's that had the 3.90's?

Thanks

automatics (except on convertibles) will have the 3.9 rear end.

The 88 convertible will have the 3.9 regardless of tranny. All other convertibles (regardless of tranny) will have the 4.1 rear end.

And all this info can be found in the options and standard features sticky at the top of the FC section. Please read that and the FAQ for FC before posting

These are not American cars with detailed VIN decoding for rear end ratios.

The VIN's only tell you...
Country of origin
Manufacturer
Model
Turbo or non-turbo
Factory origin
This works for all North American model VINs.
