Worth it to Keep FC Stock?

I plan to keep all but the engine stock on my 88 GXL, and maybe some suspension upgrades, but on cosmetically all original, what do you all think?

If you want a car thats very reliable only do a few engine bolt-ons. Also if you get full exhaust and header it can be quite loud.

reliability mods first....then full intake, header (milage mod ) w/ presilencer and high-flow cat, suspension, brakes. She'll run nice and still be a pleasure to drive.

well it depends on what you wanna do with the car, As BigRetardHead pointed out there are many choices. Also It depends on what your future plans are, There are people on this site that bought an rx7 to keep it stock and wait till its a clasic (imo its one already ) other like me plan to keep it, and some are moddin the absolute **** out of there car

You could do suspension stuff without people knowing.

Do polyurathane bushings but besure to get black ones. Remove the DTSS feature. Do a spring strut install. However, paint those two things flat black. Also, get some really sticky tires.

You could do a stainless steel brake line. But try to find lines that have rubber covering on the stainless steel. And of course you could upgrade your brake pads.

MOST people would believe the car to be stock. Unless, you find somebody who knows their mazda.

I like your thinking. Here's what I'm doing. Maybe you will get some ideas:

Done:
-------
Bonez High-Flow Cat & Presilencer
New Exhaust
SS Brake Lines, New Rotors, Calipers, Master Cylinder, and ATE Super Blue Brake Fluid
GTUs Rear End (Finishing Next Week)
Lots of Misc. Electrical and Mechanical Fixes

To Do:
--------
Shock & Spring Upgrade
Pineapple 6PI Inserts (Yes, I'm using Green Loctite.)
Silicone Vacuum Hoses
New Tires (Probably 205/55-15)

Experimental:
----------------
Custom Programmable Speed Density Air Intake System

Cosmetic:
------------
New Exterior Window Trims
New Stock '90 GXL Wheels
New Carpet
New Leather Seat Covers
New Leather Shifter & E-Brake Boots
Lots of Wax
Rain-X

cbrinega, sounds like your gonna have a kick *** setup, definitly something im goin for, only thing holding me back is the funding so far, but i want to get a whole new exhaust, i already have an s5 intake to put on, then suspension upgrades will be next. As far as a turbo, i don't know about that yet, its up in the air, its not something i have money for and...to tell you the truth i don't know a lot about em. Ideally i want to squeeze as much out of the N/A as i can, then buy a t2.

Well i got lots to do still, i haven't even put my running engine in yet! better go get to work

It's an 88 GXL... Nothing really special or rare about it. IT WILL NEVER BE A COLLECTOR ITEM OR APPRECIATE IN VALUE. So all you have to do is pick your mods according to your tastes and your budget. Have fun.

Here is where I picked up my interior carpet set ($199):
http://www.1aautomotive.com/

Here is where I purchased the leather seat covers (clearance section):
http://www.mazdaformance.com

I'll post some interior pics some time after I finish road testing the new diff. I've had the major interior work done for quite a while now.

Engine (intake + exhaust), suspension, and weight reduction would be my choice.

I say mod the hell out of it! These cars are cheap and reasonably plentiful. You can't go wrong with a full intake/exhaust. If you want it quiet, keep some kind of cat on there and baffled mufflers/presilencer. My car is only kinda loud at WOT, and I think it sounds sweet.
If you have a Base or GXL, the TII struts are a cheap way to get a nice setup. Adjustables or coilovers are even nicer, but (IMO) not worth it unless you plan to flog the hell out of it and can REALLY drive.
I'm not fond of "Look at me" (or is that arrest me now please) mods, as I like to drive just a little harder than the law allows. Doesn't everyone here? If not, why don't you have a heavier (and more luxurious) or more efficient car?
