Before you start prying at the door from the outside, pop the hatch and reach at it from the inside and you can pop it by hand. Take the rear cover that covers the spare down and just follow the cable to the side where it attachs.
A little less ghetto than the other response, unless you are a lazy *** also?

sometimes the little pin on the inside of the gas cap door will get stuck. if it's stuck sticking out, it wont open. Does that on my car sometimes. I dont know if this will help but sometimes if I pull the lever a little harder it opens. also, try pushing down on the lever all the way, then pull it back up. Otherwise it's probably your release cable like was said above ^^

Open the hatch, disconnect the carpet on the passenger's side, and get a flashlight in there. There's a manual release on the latch that you can pull back with a finger.

I have a convertible and suffer from a sticking gas door also. I go inside the interior trim panels and pull the release from inside. I know, it is kind of ghetto, but it works. I am trying to figure out where the cable is having a problem, too.
