gas mileage difference

Wow, well I made a road trip up to Bellingham, WA from Bremerton, WA. Pretty much jumped on I-5 North, and took I-5 the whole way. Averaged approx. 70-85, with a moment of spirited driving up to approx. 130. Silly 240sx. . Anywho, I got 37 MPG on my trip. But when driving in town and going to work, etc. I average about 19 MPG. Why the insane difference?

That can't be right, 37. Check your numbers.

Yeah, that definatly doesn't sound right. Even 27mpg would sound sketchy. I don't think they got 27mpg when they were brand new.

I was lucky to manage 22mpg going cross country a couple of weeks ago. I averaged 85mph and a stop of at Deal's Gap. (1989 TurboII, I/E, FCD)

Highway driving is far more efficient than daily stop-and-go, short-trip driving. You can see that by your EPA estimated fuel efficiency....city MPG is nearly always a good bit less than highway MPG. I can't say with exact certainty the reason for it but my theory is thus: at a certain engine speed you use roughly the same amount of fuel regardless of what gear you're in. So, the faster you go the higher your MPG given the same engine speed as you would, in theory, go futher using the same amount of fuel. Driving in your upper gears keeps your engine speed lower while still pushing your car at 85mph. Very simplified and I'm sure it's off is some aspects but it makes logical sense....I think.

Point of reference, I recently did a cross country trip in my car, a 2k VW GTI with a VR6. EPA specs for my car off the window sales sticker (which is still in the glove box) are 20 city/28 highway MPG. I was at or near 85 in 5th the whole way from Orlando to Chicago and averaged about 32MPG. So it is possible to exceed what your car is "supposed" to do if you drive right (who wants to do that?! ) though I admit, 37 does seem a bit high.

5rth gear at 80mph put me about 3200rpm. I think I read somewhere that at 3500rpm the secondary injectors kick in and that wastes more fuel. So, cruising at 80mph is just abou the optimum speed for fuel mileage. Or at least that's what I figure.

maybe u were only running on one rotor lol. That might do it. I get about 19-20 in my vert, regardless of what type of driving i do. 22 with a turbo II eh? looks like it might be time for an upgrade, for the sake of fuel efficiency of course :-)

Mazda needs to bring it back to the states as a flex-fuel hybrid. :-?

my rx7 has been averaging 25mpg with mixed city/hwy
funniest thing about that though is before my car took adump due to the pulsation damper and me just letting it sitfor a year cause I couldn't fnid one other then the dealerships $173 version of the part it actually gets better gas mileage. before it sat it was averaging about 22mph now it sits for a year and the only other difference I make is clean the injectors I now go from 22mpg up to 25mpg avg at times comming close to 26. if you doubt my math skills 302miles with a fillup of 12.025gallons of fuel. the only mods are ported intake manifold, K&N filter, rb header, straight pipe for the mid pipe. was getting that mileage after putting the motoria cat-back on there gas mileage I don't think has changed

I have hit 30mpg on a good before with the tps not even hooked up. oh wait I never had one at that time.

It might've been more like 3k. I said it was about 3200. I'd have to go out driving again to find out. I'm working off of memory.

Hmmm

Well, you guys can do the numbers then.

Reset odometer before I left, and filled up. 300 miles and half a tank gone. approx. 7 gallons to refil.

I never had to fill up, and I still had half a tank. Running on 1 rotor? LoL. That would be cool. I could use the improved gas mileage. Though, the power is a bit much to be 1 rotor.

one should recall the fact that when they did the EPA highway estimates for this car, the highway speed limit was 55. The guys who did the study probably followed the speedlimit. Once your in fifth, there's no more gears to lower those RPMs. Although I'm well aware that you can over-acheive those estimated gas miles, I still certainly think you are WAY off with the 37mpg. Way off. Either you hit your trip before actually filling up and forgot, or you did your math wrong.

On a long trip, I get about 20mpg. Although even on my 40 mile daily trips to work, which are mostly freeway, I still only ever get about 15mpg.

silly rice.

you reset the tripometer, and then went to the gas station?

dude, you're supposed to fill up, close that cap, and hit the meter to zero. Not the other way around.

Well, now you're up to 42+. It just keeps getting more ridiculous.

Dude, these cars don't get that kinda fuel economy.

How does this sound? I calculate it only being about 150 miles from bremerton to bellingham. 150 miles on 7 gallons gets you about 21mpg. This sounds much more reasonable.

My record is 29 MPG with all highway except about 15-20 miles of city driving. I think I averaged 80-85. This was also on a fresh rebuild with all new housings. I also had my windows down the whole way. All the considered, 38 might theoretically be possible with solid, flat highway driving at the optimum fuel efficiency range, no AC with windows up, and a brand new engine. I doubt that was the case, however.

That makes a little more sense. For the record, before my rebuild the best I ever got was about 23 MPG.

Eh, maybe sometime one of you guys can follow me.

And to the guy who said I am supposed to reset the trip meter after I refil. I did that. The way I wrote it though made it sound different. I reset the trip the same time i refilled.

I love the highway gas mileage on this car. Sorry you guys all get terrible highway miles.

I'm not believing it either! I get 275 km (half a tank of gas) on my S5 on city driving and I consider that good. A lil over 40 bucks will get me from half to full. 80 bucks for a full fill up at the light...

Basically you just drove my whole tank in half a tank!

really don't know how you would get 42 mpg. that's better then my honda gets, almost double what the EPA says you get (which I easily believe you can outdo the epa numbers but not that much)

something must be off cause 42 mpg just doesn't sound right at all
