gas gauge only works above half tank

gas gauge only works above half tank

i have a 90 gxl and gas gauge only work above half tank. if my gas is below half it drops down below E. could this be my sending unit?

Which you can prove by momentarily grounding the input to the fuel gauge (wiring diagrams in FAQ). The gauge should fly to the top. Don't keep it grounded for more then a few seconds, or you can damage it.

i've also heard this symptom caused by dirty contacts on the back of the fuel guage itself. Do the test aaron mentioned before you replace anything to be sure its not the actual guage.
