gap in rear speaker grill

I am installing a 6.5 kenwood at each rear shock tower. I want to mount the new speakers in the old enclosure, so I took off the old speakers, removed the amp, and resoldered the speaker wires. BTW, I am using Crutchfield's speaker adapter plate.....looks like it should work fine...

problem:

each of our rear stock speaker really has two grills - one small one right over the speaker, and a bigger one outside - the big one is what we see when looking at the speaker...

BUT...now that the old speaker and inside plate/grill is gone, the outside grill only cover a little more than half of the speaker... see pics...

what do you guys do to protect the speaker???

thanks....

Huh, I put Infinity Kappas back there and have the same problem. Sorta just lived with it. They look a little sundamaged after about five years.

I would say just live with with it. Unless you wanted to do away with those covers and make something your self.

I guess it is like advertising what you have. But who would go to the troble to jack your speakers?

Yes i say the same thing, deal with it i have jensen 3 ways (120w 3ways 40 bucks) and it looks the same as that picture. In the end its doesnt even matter. If your bitching about speaker 5 years from now then you need to get a life.

As far as damage goes, I'd only worry about fading. Unless you have chunks of concrete in the back and are going off roading...

Maybe cutting a piece of very thin cloth black or colored and bolting it over the speaker might help without distorting the sound any noticable amount. Would probably help with theft too (they wouldn't necessarily see what you have.

My covers are just a solid grill. I have an 86 sport. I don't know if all 86's came like that or just a few models, but you might want to look into it if you are looking for something different.

you musta have the version without the amp???

while you guys are at it..

any one uses Alpine heads?????

I bought the Alpine CDA-7894, and it tells me NOT to use the stock power lead - it wants me to tap power directly from the battery...

is it really necessary?? I am only driving a pair of kenwood 6.5 at the back and 4" component at the front (I have an 87T2). Is it gonna suck so much juice that it may fry the wires??? Only 27watts rms....

thanks for your input...

Go to your local radio shack and get some speaker cloth. Attach that to the underside of the stock speaker cover, and it will cover the and protect the speaker nicely.

The other option is to use the non-premium speaker covers as found on the S5 cars or S4 Sport, base,GTU,SE models

Wow, that is weird. All the times that I have seen RX-7s I have never really seen the 4 seater.

Intresting

Just buy speakers in the 6.5"S oversized form factor and use the speaker grills from those speakers. It will work and look OEM.

You can pop the plastic OEM grill out by drilling the little plastic support tabs out of the underside of the OEM speaker pod.

hmm....6.5S grill fits good?? I got to check that out...thanks....

otherwise I will just have to custom made some adapter ring to fit the new grill...

bummer...

btw, as long as we are on the same topic, what's the best way way to connect a 10awg wire to the 22awg yellow power wire going to the head??

And what's the little black cap that came with the RF wire kit??

see pic.....

thanks....

I actually used the plates that come with the 5 1/4 size speakers and beat it out with a hammer and a block and made it fit the 6 1/2s worked out nice. -Gabe
